Tales Of The Thames: Uncovering Stories with Arts & Citizen Science | The Community Works

Tales Of The Thames: Uncovering Stories with Arts & Citizen Science | The Community Works

Aug 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Cultural Experiences
Pollution in the River Thames has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, leaving many communities along its banks feeling outraged, powerless, and grieving the loss of a cherished natural space. Tales Of The Thames invites you to come together in response — to share, reflect, and begin to imagine new ways forward through art and citizen science. The art portion of this workshop is led by Anya Gleizer and offers a creative space for processing ecological grief, reconnecting with the more-than-human world, and beginning conversations that matter. Through storytelling and collaborative embroidery, participants will contribute to the Tamesis Robe — a growing piece of communal textile art featuring a to-scale, 15-metre-long map of the Thames watershed. As the robe travels to communities along the river, it gathers new stories, threads, and perspectives. The event will also include a citizen science taster session in collaboration with Thames21, offering an introduction to how local residents can play an active role in monitoring and protecting Oxford’s rivers and streams. It will provide a hands-on opportunity to explore the tools and approaches used in community-led water health monitoring. This event is part of Makespace Oxfordshire’s Common Futures programme, a series of public workshops and events designed to foster connection, creativity, and collective imagining ahead of the opening of our new civic space on George Street. We will meet at The Community Works but some of the session will be spent outside. The Community Works has an accessible bathroom and level access at the rear of the building. Let us know if you will need this and we will direct you. Information Source: Makespace Oxford | eventbrite

The BSPR’s Sixteenth Conference Creativity and Creation 4th – 6th September, 2025 Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford Keynote Speakers: Clare Carlisle (King's College London) Jessica Frazier (Oxford) Catherine Pickstock (Cambridge) Michael Puett (Harvard) The 2025 conference theme encompasses both human creativity and divine creation, across the full range of religious and philosophical traditions, theistic or otherwise. Presentations may focus on either human creativity or divine creation, or consider the relationship between the two. They may explore the metaphysics, ethics or phenomenology of creative acts (human or divine). We welcome philosophical reflection on the role of the arts in religious life and thought. We also want to consider the creative aspects of philosophical work itself. Conceptual and historical approaches are equally welcome, and attention to both practice and theory is warmly encouraged. Questions addressed by the conference may include, but are not limited to, the following: What is the relationship between human creativity and divine creation? To what extent is philosophical thinking a creative activity? How can we think philosophically about the role of the arts in religious life? What is the connection between creativity and desire / knowledge / freedom / flourishing? What account of agency underpins our conceptions of creation and creativity? How do alternative models of theism (e.g. pantheism, panentheism, polytheism, classical monotheism) conceptualise creation? Information Source: British Society for Philosophy of Religion | eventbrite

This Is For Everyone The most influential inventor of the modern world, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a different kind of visionary. Born in the same year as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, Berners-Lee famously shared his invention, the World Wide Web, for no commercial reward. Its widespread adoption changed everything – transforming humanity into the first digital species. Through the web, we live, work, dream and connect. In this intimate memoir, Berners-Lee tells the story of his iconic invention, exploring how it launched a new era of creativity and collaboration, while unleashing a commercial race that today imperils democracies and polarizes public debate. Filled with his characteristic optimism, technical insight and wry humour, this is a book about the power of technology – both to fuel our worst instincts and to profoundly shape our lives for the better. As the rapid development of artificial intelligence heralds a new era of innovation, Berners-Lee is the perfect guide to the crucial decisions ahead – and provides a gripping, in-the-room account of the rise of the online world. Peppered with rich anecdotes and amusing reflections, This is For Everyone is an essential read for understanding our times, and a bold manifesto for advancing humanity's future. Tim Berners-Lee Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born on 8 June 1955 and grew up in London. He studied physics at the University of Oxford before working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva. While at CERN, he wrote a program for storing information including using random associations that he named ‘Enquire’. While never published, Enquire became Sir Tim’s conceptual basis for marrying hypertext with the internet to create a system for sharing and distributing information globally. He published this proposal in a paper titled ‘Information Management: A Proposal’ in 1989. This was the World Wide Web (WWW). Sir Tim has been a tireless advocate for shared standards, open web access for all and the empowerment of individuals on the web. He founded the World Web Consortium (W3C), the global web standards body, where he remains Emeritus Director. He is also the co-founder of the Open Data Institute and World Wide Web Foundation. As co-founder/CTO of Inrupt he has developed the Solid Protocol, pioneering open-source technology to provide data sovereignty for citizens, governments and companies. Sir Tim is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Oxford, and has been the recipient of several honorary degrees and awards, including the Seoul Peace Prize and the Turing Prize widely recognised as akin to the Nobel Prize for Computing. He was knighted in 2004 and later appointed to the Order of Merit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite
