We're so excited to announce that Terry Deary will be joining us for an event to celebrate the release of The History of Britain in Ten Enemies in paperback! A ridiculously funny book for adults from the multimillion-copy bestselling author of the Horrible Histories, perfect for fans of Unruly by David Mitchell. Ah, Britain. So special. The greatest nation on earth, some say. And we did it all on our own. Didn’t we? Well... not quite. As it happens Britannia got its name from the Romans, and for the past two centuries we have been ruled by Germans. As Horrible Histories author Terry Deary argues, nations and their leaders are defined by the enemies they make. - Elizabeth I would count as a minor royal without the Spanish Armada - Without the Nazis, Churchill would be remembered as an opposition windbag - The surprisingly sadistic Boudica would be forgotten if it weren't for the Roman Ninth Legion And after all, every nation sometimes needs a bit of unifying Blitz spirit (although in an ideal world, we wouldn’t have accidentally let Corporal Hitler go in the first place). The British have a proud history of choosing their enemies, from the Romans to the Germans. You might even say those enemies made Britain what it is today... A History of Britain in Ten Enemies is a witty, whistlestop tour through the history of Britain that will have you laughing as you find out what they didn't teach you in school. We're thrilled to have Robert Macfarlane joining us on the 10th of May at 7pm to talk about his new book, Is a River Alive?. Robert will be in conversation with Amy-Jane Beer, author of The Flow! Boldly and persuasively recasting rivers as living beings, Is a River Alive? is a characteristically eloquent and informed volume from the author of Underland and The Old Ways traverses Ecuador, Southern India, Quebec and Macfarlane's Cambridge home in the writer's most personal and political work yet. At once Macfarlane’s most personal and most political book to date, Is a River Alive? will open hearts, spark debates and lead us to the revelation that our fate flows with that of rivers – and always has. The Flow is a book about water, and, like water, it meanders, cascades and percolates through many lives, landscapes and stories. Inspired by a visit to the river where her close friend tragically died twelve years earlier, Amy-Jane Beer reconnects with the waterways and wild places she has always felt an affinity for in this intimate, lyrically written reflection on nature and loss. We're delighted to have Lotte Jeffs joining us on the 15th of May to celebrate the paperback release of her wonderful Leeds-based book, This Love! Spanning ten years of extraordinary friendship, This Love is a vivid and epic tale of finding your soulmates, building an unconventional family and the limitless, ever-changing forms love can take -perfect for fans of Talking at Night, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and One Day When Mae and Ari meet their final year at the University of Leeds, their connection is magnetic. Mae, whilst stubborn and no stranger to breaking hearts, needs Ari's bright light to guide her out of her self-centred ways; Ari, vibrant, charming and reeling in the aftermath of a scandal in New York, clings to Mae as his grounding anchor. As the years sweep by, the two traverse the tumult of life: toxic partners and hidden secrets, the heavy weight of grief, and a complicated, unignorable desire to start a family . . . If they can hold onto one another in the face of the relentless past and the inevitable future, they might discover how to build something beautiful out of their expansive, boundary-breaking love. Whose stories get printed? Whose voices fill the pages? Independent publishing tears through the silence, carving space for the voices that refuse to be erased. From underground zines to radical manifestos, from risograph prints to hand-bound books, publishing has long been a tool of resistance, resilience, and rebellion. It is where the marginalized take control of their own narratives, where ink becomes activism, and where paper holds the weight of histories yet to be told. This exhibition invites you to step inside the messy, urgent, and unapologetic world of independent publishing— where words spark movements, pages hold power, and creativity knows no limits. We're thrilled to have talented travel writer Ben Aitken joining us for an event on the 20th of May at 7pm! Ben will be talking about his new book, Sh*tty Breaks! Adios Paris. Hello Wolverhampton. Not everything that glitters is gold - which is why Ben Aitken gave London the cold shoulder and went to Preston instead. This book is a celebration of the underdog; a hymn to the wrong direction; and evidence that there's no such thing as a shitty break. What's more, by spreading its affection beyond the usual suspects (which are often overdone and overpriced), 'Shitty Breaks' promotes a less expensive and more sustainable brand of travel. We've delighted to have Hazel McBride, author of the highly-anticipated romantasy, A Fate Forged in Fire, joining us for an event on the 28th of May at 7pm! How much is she willing to sacrifice to claim her throne? A powerfully blessed blacksmith must use her wits and fire magic to overthrow the corrupt powers ruling the kingdom, while also fighting her desire for a certain dragon-riding adversary in this sizzling Celtic-inspired romantasy, perfect for fans of House of the Dragon and Fourth Wing. Once a territory built on matriarchal rule, Tìr Teine has been without a female heir for centuries. Through a long line of corrupt kings, an oppressive anti-magic teaching has infected the land - leading to the tragic decline of the dragons. Aemyra was born to lead, gifted with fire magic from the Goddess Brigid. For years she has hidden in the shadows, waiting for the king to die so she can bond to his dragon, claim her birthright and protect her people. When her carefully laid plans are foiled, Aemyra is thrust into a deadly game of politics and plots. Her greatest enemy? Prince Fiorean - the dragon-riding, fire-wielding royal whose icy arrogance and raw power thwart her every step. But as chaos engulfs the court, Aemyra and Prince Fiorean are forced to forge an uneasy alliance to survive. And in the heat of battle, their mutual hatred ignites something neither of them can control. Behind enemy lines and slowly falling for the only man that stands between her and the throne, Aemyra begins to uncover the true weight of the crown. Will she ignite the flames of change for her people - or will love burn her alive? Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Hey friends. It went so well last time we're doing it again ! One year in with the best live audience in the business and we know it works, so we're back for more! Each week a different guest joins World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker and we share something old, something new, Something Borrowed, and something blue. Sometimes poems, sometimes music, always a good time. Since last season I have had a baby (!) and am techinically on paternity leave but the one exception is my other baby which is this baby of a night now at ARK Cliftonville with Special Guest Lemn Sissay As well as some chat and performance from me and Lemn, there will be an open mic where you are welcome to come and perform a poem or song (either your own or Something Borrowed (!) Harry Baker is the World Poetry Slam Champion and champion of the people. His TED Talks have been watched by millions of people and translated into over 20 different languages. He has two books published with Burning Eye and his newest collection, Wonderful, is out NOW accompanied by a tour around the UK and Ireland. He is the only person to have sold out the Tom Thumb Theatre three nights in a row and he is yet to find anywhere that does a better French Toast than Forts. Lemn Sissay is a Number One Sunday Times Best selling author. He has graced stages throughout the world: from The Library of Congress in the USA to London Palladium in the UK. Google “Lemn Sissay” and all the return hits will be about him. There is only one person in the world named Lemn Sissay and he is with us, here, now. He has been top of Harry's list of 'maybe one day' dream guests and that day is today! ARK Cliftonville is Former Synagogue turned cultural space and graciously welcomed us when we needed to find a space bigger than Forts, which means we can now book people like Lemn flipping Sissay. You are wonderful and if you've read this far you are absolutely my kind of person, so I would love to see you there. As with all my shows there is an option for a free ticket if you can't afford to pay for one in this moment, no questions asked.
