The Toll Houses of Devon | The Mint Methodist Church Centre (Rowe Hall)

The Toll Houses of Devon | The Mint Methodist Church Centre (Rowe Hall)

Sep 11, 2025 (UTC+1)
Exeter
Cultural Experiences
Turnpike Trusts in Devon were set up through various Acts of Parliament from 1753-1831 resulting usually from vigorous petitioning by local worthies about the state of the roads in the County. Their remit was to repair existing roads and where necessary widen and build new sections. The Exeter Turnpike Trust was the first be formed and at its peak had responsibility for around 150 miles within the County. Tolls were to be charged to horse drawn travellers to fund the road repairs and to facilitate a 24-hour presence of their collectors the Turnpike Trusts built small associated dwellings at their gates: - the toll-houses. They generally comprised very minimal accommodation of two rooms with a scullery and privy attached, although larger types did become more common in later years. Usually one or two storeys high, the houses came in many shapes and sizes. They were both functional and to some extent expressions of architectural style often employing an octagonal ground plan to advertise their special purpose. Today in the first half of the 21st Century many of these roadside buildings survive as private dwellings in Devon. Tim’s illustrated talk will show examples of survivors within the County and will place particular emphasis on those houses that operated for the Exeter Turnpike Trust with some tales of the toll-collectors from the mid to late 19th Century. There will also be reference to turnpike related items such as milestones including a remarkable set of markers running from the city out to Chudleigh that received Grade II listed status as recently as 2017. Our speaker, Tim Jenkinson, has lived in South Devon since 1988. He has had successful careers at the University of Plymouth, where he taught nursing, and as a local historian. As a historian, he has written and published a number of articles and books about the history of Devon, including books about toll houses. If you are a member of the Exeter Local History Society, tickets are free for you - please select a £0 ticket when registering for the event. If you are not a member of the Society, there is a small (£5) entry fee. If you would like to attend as a non-member, please select a non-member ticket when registering. Baltic Cinema: Neptune Frost Thu 11 September | 18:30 £6 Full price / £4 Students, under 18s, unwaged and 65+ Anisia Uzeyman & Saul Williams Rwanda / USA 105’ (cert. 15)English, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi with English subtitles | Digital video Screened here as a response to Harold Offeh’s exhibition Mothership 2.0 , Anisia Uzeyman and Saul Williams’ mind-bendingly inventive film defies easy classification. Part-musical, part-sci fi, part-political polemic, Neptune Frost is an electrifying experience which fuses the lo-fi and the high-camp, the grungily analogue and the open-sourced digital. A vast Rwandan coltan mine and Burundian village-turned-techno-scrapheap hacker encampment set the scene for this non-conforming musical adventure. An electrifying connection between intersex runaway Neptune (Elvis Ngabo and Cheryl Isheja) and coltan miner Matalusa (Kaya Free) create a virtual offspring with the potential to ignite a revolution. The soundtrack, composed by Williams, is our emotional and spiritual guide through overlapping analogue and digital universes, embracing his defiantly experimental, activist and intersectional position. Blending afro-futuristic and glitch aesthetics, the creative team’s dynamic vision includes art direction from polymath Cedric Mizero (fashion designer, artist, photographer) and producer backing from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton and In the Heights. Made with an entirely Rwandan and Burundian cast and crew, Neptune Frost presents an intoxicatingly original way to explore economic inequality specific to this mining region of Africa, and the role of technology as both oppressor and liberator. "Hauntingly beautiful" — Variety "The future of Black film. Pure cinematic power." — The Hollywood Reporter Doors open 18:30; Film starts 18:45. Baltic Kitchen is open until 18:30 for drinks, which you are welcome to take up to the cinema. Please note we cannot offer refunds on this event. Marcus Vergette – THE FARM | 12 Bar Music & Social

Sep 12, 2025 (UTC+1)
Exeter
Arts Sculpture
THE FARM is a powerful blend of sound, story and landscape. Written and led by Marcus, this suite of vocal compositions captures the essence of the Devon farm he’s called home for over 35 years. With lyrics by Kate Westbrook, P.E. Mondjegou, and an excerpt from Ted Hughes’ Hawk , the music paints an intimate portrait of place, ecology, and time. Expect live performance interwoven with field recordings: the dawn chorus, rain on leaves, auction calls, bells from a 15th-century church. And that’s not all – the set includes music played on a set of hand-sculpted plaster bells made by Marcus himself. Featuring vocals from Nel Hubbard, Jessica Wynn Jones and Lucy Foat, with William Butterworth on piano, Jem Fatma on drums, and Marcus on bass, this is a deeply original performance that folds music, nature, and sculpture into one immersive experience. A must for fans of: jazz, experimental sound, soundscape composition, ecological art, and live performance with a twist. Information Source: 12 Bar Music & Social | eventbrite

The goal of the energetic, Futsal Unleashed Swansea is to change the way people think about futsal and increase its awareness in the city. The festival portrays futsal as a fast-paced, skill-driven, and youth-focused cultural product, positioning it as more than just a competitive sport.    The event offers an immersive experience that embodies futsal's creative and urban identity by combining live futsal matches, local musicians, influencer appearances, and interactive skill zones. The festival functions as a brand-led showcase and a grassroots activation, supported by Swansea Council, university partners, and local sports organizations.  Key features will include:  Live exhibition games with visiting players, local teams, and youth academies.  Futsal skill zones that are interactive and feature mini-matches, dribbling workouts, and shooting challenges.  Pop-up futsal courts in the street style, demonstrating how the game blends seamlessly with urban settings. And also a final game within Swansea University sports hall.   Live DJ sets and MCs that combine music and sports to appeal to Swansea's younger audience.   Using influencers and on-location media to promote the event on digital channels.  Information Source: eventbrite

Opening days and times: Friday 12 September, 10am-4pm Saturday 13 September, 10am-4pm Sunday 14 September 2024, 10am-4pm Monday 15 September 2024, 10am- 1pm The Grange was built by Augustus Pugin in 1845 and remained in the family until 1928. The building reflects Pugin's belief in the Gothic style as the only true Christian architecture and his ideal to live out his life in the Middle Ages. Pugin produced some of his finest work at The Grange including designs for the House of Lords. St Edward’s Presbytery which was built by Augustus Welby Pugin in 1850, part of this great architect’s original conception for this important Gothic revival site on the West Cliffs. The Presbytery has much restrained Pugin detailing to admire, although this simple house was not given the rich interiors of The Grange. It housed priests for only a few years. In the 1860s, Edward Pugin added a well-lit studio overlooking the courtyard of The Grange for his own architectural practice. Pugins lived here until 1928, when the Presbytery became part of the monks’ school. Free admission, leaflets on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available on site. Accessibility At this property you are able to drive and drop any guests with limited mobility at the entrance and then return your car to suitable parking in the area. Donating to Landmark We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to visit a Landmark for free as part of our Open Day programme, and as such we’re pleased to continue to offer free entry at all our Open Days in 2025. The Landmark Trust is a building conservation charity that relies on donations to support its work. Over the past 60 years, public support has helped us rescue over 200 historic buildings and make them available for all to experience and enjoy. Your support by attending our events, booking a workshop, and making a donation allows us to continue to save buildings at risk and continue to maintain those already in our care. Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore a future Landmark, offer opportunities for young people to experience history first-hand, or provide a charity with free Landmark stay for their service users through our 50 for Free scheme. Donations can be made when you book your Eventbrite ticket, at the event via contactless donation points, or after your visit via our website under Support.
