Central to the exhibition is candomblé—the Afro-Brazilian religion that draws on traditions of West African ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu, as well as some aspects Roman Catholicism. Inspired by ritual practices, these artists pay homage to deities and ancestral spirits, exuding divine potency and wisdom in their works. The reimagined symbolic imagery from candomblé serves as a visual testament to the strength of a people who have endured, persisted, and thrived.

The panther is the state animal of Florida, the last big cat surviving east of the Mississippi River, and an icon of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. A subspecies of the puma, the panther was driven to extinction throughout its range in the eastern United States, except for a small remnant population that persisted in Florida’s Everglades. Panther numbers had dwindled to fewer than 20 individuals by the 1980s, but conservation efforts have helped the population rebound to nearly 200 today. The biggest obstacle to the panther’s continued recovery is access to enough of its historic territory throughout Florida and adjoining states.

Narratives in Focus is a photography exhibition featuring a diverse range of artists from the Caribbean, United States Latin America, and Africa. One hundred years after his birth, Gyula Kosice: Intergalactic celebrates the career of the Argentine artist Gyula Kosice (b. 1924, Košice, Czechoslovakia; d. 2016, Buenos Aires, Argentina), an experimental artist, sculptor, poet, and theorist. Co-founder of Arturo (1944) and Madí (1946), two constructive art groups that were centered in the Río de la Plata region between Uruguay and Argentina, he was also a prominent figure in the international avant-garde after 1945. His practice introduced original artistic ideas, such as interactive sculptures, which questioned the relationship between the art object and the spectator and experimented with a wide range of materials, many of which had never been used in art before. Like Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz-Diez, he incorporated light and motion yet, was one of the first to incorporate water in his works. Intergalactic focuses on his experimental production, in which motion was a constant and essential feature. It includes works that he created between 1950 and 1980, such as acrylic sculptures, kinetic reliefs, and drops of water, most of which incorporated lights and were activated by aerators and motors. The exhibition features Gyula Kosice’s most ambitious work, The Hydrospatial City (1946–2004), an experiential installation comprised of architectural prototypes that speculate on the possibility of human settlement beyond Earth brought on by socioeconomic inequality, environmental degradation, and astronomical population growth. As an alternative, he proposed a city of semi-open, modular habitats suspended 5000 feet above the ground and powered by oxygen and hydrogen harnessed from water vapor in the clouds.

Headwind by Susanne Schirato explores the dynamic relationship between human activity and the environment. This outdoor, site-specific installation evokes a school of fish formation through blue-dyed windsocks that shift direction with the wind. Schirato draws from environmental art traditions to transform root-like forms into wind-filled figures that gesture toward systems of power. The poetic ambiguity of the word windsock—both as a weather instrument and a slang term in Portuguese—adds layers of meaning to these floating innate beings. Through its visual and conceptual language, Headwind invites contemplation on the fragility of ecosystems, the urgency of climate awareness and the complexities of human behavior. Headwind is Schirato’s first solo show in the United States.

Inspired by the murals of Carl Abrahams lining the departures lounge of Kingston Jamaica’s Norman Manley International Airport, Hurvin Anderson presents a new, sixteen-panel, monumental painting in his first solo show at Pérez Art Museum Miami. Mining the space between abstraction and representation in painting, Anderson creates art that is at once steeped in history but also acutely contemporary. Born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents of the Windrush Generation, a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, Anderson’s paintings are grounded in the universal spaces and visual archive of the landscape tradition so much a part of the history of modern western art. Yet, as is demonstrated here, he is also an explorer of what those histories mean in the African diaspora and, more specifically, within the cultural and social traditions of the Caribbean. In 2022, Anderson participated in the Kingston Biennial. While working on that project, he traveled to and from Jamaica through Miami; coming face-to-face with the two murals Abrahams painted on Jamaican history for the airport in 1985. During this time, Abrahams’s murals began resonating with Anderson in a different way. Reflecting on the importance of Jamaican history, and the rich history of the Caribbean as a whole, Anderson began working on ideas for this show while taking these trips. Thinking of what these historical murals mean for immigration, but also as a point of entry and departure for tourism, Anderson developed this new sixteen-panel painting.

Cuban-born Agustín Fernández (1928–2006) was a modern master, incorporating a non-dualistic visual language of figuration and abstraction. Juxtaposing anatomical images with subdued coloration, Fernández is an artist difficult to position within the color-saturated Cuban canon. His ambiguous forms are evocative of flesh and eros, represented through a monochromatic palette. Resonating with the broader modernist movement, Fernández’s work explores themes of exile, separation, and abandonment. Self-identifying as a “painter of the brush,” Fernández was also an undisputed master of drawing. A first-rate draftsman, his works include depictions of ripped and folded paper, pins, hooks, belts, lines, and spikes. His aesthetic in both painting and drawing revolves around these iconographic elements, reflecting a world of aggression and conflict, physical pain, and metaphysical contemplation. Fernández examines these themes through a psychological lens.

This exhibition is presented in three chapters, each showcasing a single video work by a different artist: Cao Fei, Cécile B. Evans, and Guerreiro do Divino Amor. Visitors are encouraged to return to experience the works individually. Each video takes viewers on a journey through alternate realities where the boundaries between the real, the virtual, and the imagined blur. Collectively, the works examine how constructed worlds—whether simulated, cultural, or mythological—shape our understanding of identity, space, and power.

It reveals the breadth and complexity of Amaral’s practice, highlighting crucial periods in the development of her career as she moved from colorful explorations of the grid to experiments with materiality and scale.

Waves of Style: Swimwear Through the Decades, on view from May 10 through October 5, traces the transformation of swim fashion through historic garments and interactive displays. Guests can explore the societal influences that have shaped perceptions of swimwear while also participating in hands-on activities, including the opportunity to design their own swimwear concepts. The exhibition brings together an impressive collaboration of partners, including Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, PARAISO Miami Swim Week, Patsy West, Miami Dade College's Wolfson Archives, Keni Valenti, University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, and contemporary swimwear brands such as NADJEA, Kené Kaya, Liliana Montoya Swim, SHAN and Chromat.

The South Florida Wildlife Rescue Unit presents a mobile rescue operation—a fully equipped vehicle operated by a fictional team tasked with saving endangered species in the Everglades. Mannequins in uniform and a vitrine displaying conservation tools and artifacts create a staged yet eerily plausible scene that humorously critiques bureaucratic inefficiency while celebrating grassroots environmental activism. Dion’s work prompts reflection on the complex history of the Everglades—from early exploration and ecological exploitation to ongoing restoration efforts. Combining meticulous research with biting irony, Dion challenges how science, policy, and myth shape our perception of nature. This exhibition brings urgent environmental and social issues into focus, offering a thought-provoking look at Florida’s most fragile ecosystem.

Memory serves as the bridge between life’s fleeting moments and our ongoing formation of a sense of self—shaping our identity and anchoring us to the past. In the constant interplay of remembering and forgetting, life becomes a series of fragmented recollections that define how we exist in time and how we confront the inevitability of death. Fragments of Time: Selections from PAMM’s Collection draws on video works from the museum’s permanent collection to explore how artists reflect on the passage of time, the nature of memory, and humanity’s enduring search for life’s meaning. Through works that address reflection, loss, transformation, and the evolution of personal and collective memory, the exhibition considers how moments—both remembered and forgotten—shape our understanding of ourselves. Themes include Alzheimer’s disease, explored through Elizabeth Cerejido and Mark A. Koven’s Absence Series: Rocking Chair (2002) and Autumn Casey’s Elysian Fields (2014); the role of shared cultural memory in Glenda León’s Canalización (2014); the erosion of innocence in Hernan Bas’s Fragile Moments (2003); and the fragility of memory in the digital era in Jack Strange’s Into a Puff of Virtual Smoke (2008). Together, these works invite viewers to reflect on the fragile, transformative power of memory in shaping human experience.

Elliot & Erick Jiménez: El Monte is the first solo museum exhibition of the artist duo Elliot & Erick Jiménez. The photographers, identical twin brothers, present an entirely new body of work inspired by the spiritual tradition of Lucumí—a syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion that emerged in late nineteenth-century Cuba bringing together elements of Yoruba, Catholicism, and Spiritism—and by Lydia Cabrera’s seminal text El Monte. First published in Cuba in 1954, El Monte is a foundational study of Afro-Cuban religions that was translated into English for the first time in 2023, significantly broadening access to its insights on Caribbean spiritual practices. This exhibition highlights the Jiménez twins’ bicultural upbringing as Cuban Americans raised in the Lucumí tradition. At the center of the exhibition is a large structure that dominates the gallery space, its interior evoking both a chapel and a forest. The installation references syncretic Caribbean religions, their Catholic counterparts, and the Cuban monte (forest or wilderness)—a site associated with mystery, transformations, and spiritual encounters. Various works explore the artists’ relationship as identical twins, the structure itself symbolizing the shared space of the womb. Other works reimagine well-known art historical compositions through the lens of Lucumí, examining its intersections with colonialism and the Western art historical canon. While the exhibition primarily features photographs, it also includes sculptural elements interspersed throughout the gallery. Together, these works invite visitors to engage with themes of wonder, mystery, self-reflection, and discovery.

Our community converges to connect the heart, mind & body in an ecstatic dance inspired event, guided by organic electronic music produced & mixed by renowned sound alchemist Mose, supported by special musical guests throughout the evening as part of Mose's 2024 North American Cacao Dance Tour. It is here that he founded regular cacao dances where members of the community have the opportunity to journey deep into dance while held in a ceremonial container, free of alcohol. Beyond the multicultural rhythms and the steady hypnotic beat, Mose weaves ephemeral chanting of sacred songs and calls to love, kindness and compassion, often bringing in live musicians to create something improvisational connected with that particular place and time.
