The exhibition presents the golden age of Hungarian poster art, which evolved at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the spirit of Art Nouveau. The displayed material includes some 120 posters by famous painters such as József Rippl-Rónai, János Vaszary, and Károly Ferenczy, as well as artists specialised in posters, such as Géza Faragó, Mihály Biró, Ferenc Helbing and Márton Tuszkay. The development of poster art and its beginnings in Hungary are shown in an international context and include works by the greatest of the genre: Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Koloman Moser and others. In addition to masterpieces of the Art Nouveau poster and advertising graphics, the exhibition, organised as part of the Bartók Spring Art Weeks, also evokes the Art Nouveau design of the period through books, magazines, applied art objects, ceramics and furniture.

Gyula Czimra is one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century Hungarian painting. He was a solitary and reclusive painter with a peculiar temperament, but the high quality and mature tone of his works earned him a place among the most significant Hungarian artists of his time. The Hungarian National Gallery’s large-scale retrospective presents nearly half of his known oeuvre: almost 180 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and tapestries.

The exhibition Intertwined was created as part of a collaboration between the Young Patrons programme of the Supporters’ Circle and the Hungarian National Gallery. In the first year of the collaboration, five artists under the age of thirty-five were invited to select one or more objects from the Gallery’s Contemporary Collection that they found interesting or worthy of reflection, and to create a new work based on those selections. The five artists – Szilvia Bolla, Gideon Horváth, Mónika Kárándi, Adrian Kiss, and Eszter Metzing – approached the museum’s collection from different perspectives. These interactions with works from the permanent exhibition – or “interventions” in the collection – engaged with the existing artworks and historical periods in diverse ways, including through interrogating the medium and materials.

Representatives of surrounding settlements, folk dance troupes, legionnaires, Hungarian wine troupes, lancers, hussars and flag-bearers, fire jugglers, horse-drawn carriages and brass bands will make up the colorful parade.
