The Overseas Chinese Book Fair, established in 2006, is jointly organized by the Volkswagen Group and the Sin Chew Media Group. It aims to promote the reading habits of people from all walks of life in the country. At the same time, it introduces many publishers and suppliers who grasp market trends to show the public the latest and most innovative books, stationery, audio-visual products and digital home appliances. After ten years of development, the Overseas Chinese Book Fair was listed in the Malaysian Book of Records when it entered its eleventh session, becoming the largest book fair in the country. As we all know, each Overseas Chinese Book Fair has always been held in one of the largest and most advanced international convention and exhibition centers in Malaysia, namely the Kuala Lumpur City Center Convention and Exhibition Center. It brings together more than a hundred top publishers and book and stationery suppliers from ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region, setting up about 500 booths in the book fair. Boom Boom Bang: Play & Parody in 1990s K.L. delves into the rich and complex narrative of a city in flux, told through the voices of artists, performers, and writers who helped shape an emerging counterculture. At the heart of this exhibition are the twinned concepts of parody and play, which serve as entry points into understanding the cultural landscape of 1990s Kuala Lumpur. Parody, with its use of humour to critique power and authority, became a potent tool for artists to push back against dominant narratives, to speak truth to power. This was a time when the city’s rapid development and globalisation were often portrayed in a positive light, yet beneath the surface and away from the mainstream, artists were challenging these ideals.
