Please note, the advertised start time is when our doors will open, generally music starts one hour after doors. Fresh Thursday is a unique regular event that showcases new music alongside a home-cooked meal. For more information about how this event works please read the info at the bottom of this event carefully. Thank you. If you have a dietary requirement you can indicate it by selecting one of the free add-ons when purchasing your ticket. Please note we are unable to offer refunds. You can click here to view our full refunds policy. - -- Eric Chenaux Following the release of Eric Chenaux’s last album Say Laura (2022), The Guardian wrote “the Canadian songwriter has one of the all-time great singing voices in popular music, an intensely romantic Chet Baker-ish instrument that seems to float with piercing direction, like a paper aeroplane thrown hard through mist.” With Uncut describing his songcraft “as delicate and lovely as a rare orchid” and Record Collector praising the album’s “sublime alien balladry” such are the accolades that have accrued to Chenaux’s unique and consummately uncompromising solo music for well over a decade now. Delights Of My Life opens a new chapter for the singer/guitarist and formally introduces the Eric Chenaux Trio, with Toronto-based musicians Ryan Driver on Wurlitzer organ and Phillipe Melanson on electronic percussion. Driver is a longtime collaborator, appearing on several of Chenaux’s solo albums (even embedded into the very title of the 2010 masterpiece Warm Weather With Ryan Driver). Melanson has a long list of involvements that include Bernice, Joseph Shabason, and U.S Girls, and a recent release with his Impossible Burger project on Chenaux’s own experimental label Rat-drifting, but this marks the first fulsome involvement between the two as players on a recording. --- OUTRI OUTRI is a solo bass endeavour by established North-East bass player and ‘ musical magpie ’ (NARC mag) Ian ‘dodge’ Paterson. This project takes inspiration from a love of jazz, folk, electronica, found-sound and cinematic landscapes alongside an aesthetic focus on single live recorded takes, come what may. The music combines organic shifting loops underpinned with beautiful harmonies and glitchy electronica. Having performed and recorded for the last twenty years as a side person with various NE bands and artists (YVA / Beccy Owen / Sharks Took The Rest / Nick Pride and the Pimptones / Slowlight Quartet / HAV / The Rubber Wellies / Matt Stalker and Fables / Giles Strong Quartet) in a whole range of genres from jazz to folk to pop this project is an opportunity to try and bring some of those disparate strands together. It also provides a platform for OUTRI to work with other NE based musicians on intimate ‘one-off’ collaborations, exploring the varied musical influences that make up his sound. --- More about FRESH Thursdays... FRESH happens every Thursday during our open seasons. It is a platform to bring you fresh new music served up alongside a homecooked plant based meal, board games and candles. It can be hard to get people out to hear music that they don’t know yet & this is why we decided to offer dinner as an incentive to try something new, these gigs are cosy, communal nights and often you get to hear completely new music for the very first time. The music varies across multiple genres but it is usually fairly gentle listening type music & well suited to a relaxed Thursday night. The gigs are seated and during the sets the audience is very music focused & quiet with time to chat in between the sets and at the end when we keep the bar open. We cook the food from scratch usually and dinner is well suited to lover of vegetables and wholesome cooking, it's usually something like a dhal, veggie chilli, tacos, roast veg or similar, our base line is vegan sometimes with veggie options. We can cater for nut/gluten free meals, but nuts & gluten are used in the kitchen so if you have serious allergies please bear that in mind. Doors at 7pm, we aim to get dinner ready by 8pm and will bring it to you when its ready… music usually starts around 8pm, sometimes later if it’s a busy night for food (we are a tiny team) and we aim to have the music finished by 10-10.15 pm. We can only guarantee dinner with advance tickets and these days we cap dinner at 60 meals and the food tickets do often sell out. We hope/think it's obvious that quality music and dinner for £10 is all about culture & community and that these events cost us money… If you can afford to purchase a higher level ‘Cobalt supporters‘ ticket we appreciate the additional help towards costs very much. Sheffield
Concerts
Please note, the advertised start time is when our doors will open, generally music starts one hour after doors. --- Kahil El’Zabar has been one of the deepest and most forward-thinking artists from Chicago’s renowned improvised music scene for many years. Working in many creative contexts as a member of the boundlessly innovative AACM, El’Zabar founded the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble in 1974, as a way to further explore the connections between African-American music, like jazz, with more traditional African instrumentation and rhythms. Touring frequently in Europe and the United States, they established a global reputation. The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble includes trumpeter, Corey Wilkes, tenor saxophonist Kevin Nabors, cellist Ishmael Ali and the compelling presence of Kahil El’Zabar on drum set, hand percussion, Kalimba, and soulful vocalizations. The Ensemble celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a much acclaimed Album ‘Open Me’ (SpiritMuse Records) and world tour. The EHE was founded by El’Zabar in 1974 originally as a quintet, but was soon paired down to its classic form — a trio, featuring El’Zabar on multi-percussion and voice, plus two horns. It was an unusual format, even by the standards of the outward-bound musicians of the AACM: “Some people literally laughed at our unorthodox instrumentation and approach. We were considered even stranger than most AACM bands at the time. I knew in my heart though that that this band had legs, and that my concept was based on logic as it pertains to the history of Great Black Music, i.e. a strong rhythmic foundation, innovative harmonics and counterpoint, well-balanced interplay and cacophony amongst the players, strong individual soloist, highly developed and studied ensemble dynamics, an in-depth grasp of music history, originality, fearlessness, and deep spirituality.” --- Support from Amon Ra Collective Space-faring Leeds Cosmic Jazz Ensemble, Amon Ra Collective are a large community of over 20 members, appearing at live shows for the past 3 years in different combinations of between 2-15 people. Led by Samuel Ehret-Pickett, they play an exciting fusion of energetic solos, pulsing rhythms, electronic noise, free improvisation and Butch Morris' Conduction method with jazz, rock, world, afrobeat, drum and bass, and funk compositions. Inspired by the music of Miles Davis’ electric Jazz Fusion, John Coltrane’s Fiery Impulse Releases, the spiritual jazz of Don Cherry, the ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astake and afrobeat of Fela Kuti. --- Under 25? We’re offering an under 25’s Jazz Explorer ticket to this event for just £8! Or grab a Jazz Explorers double ticket & stay on for Cosmo Sofi All Night Long - just £13 for the gig & club night! --- Please note we are unable to offer refunds. This man-made water channel dates back to Norman times and the start of industry in Sheffield, when it diverted water from the River Don to the Town Corn Mill. Now, this special habitat is a haven for flora and fauna, from ferns to fish – you might spot the odd amphibian too.    Join Dave Buttle, Emeritus Fellow from the University of Sheffield, for an easy-going wander along the goit and learn about its nature on the way.  Please donate if you're able and help keep your museums open and available for everyone to enjoy. Suggested donation £5 – when you select your tickets, please scroll down and select ‘General Admission + Donation’.   image credit: Ian M Spooner Information Source: Sheffield Museums | eventbrite

Featuring a collective of some of the best musicians from across the North, Lo Vu fosters close musical relationships and collaborations. Following a career of touring with artists such as K.O.G, Jasmine Myra and Tetes De Pois, Haskins creates a fusion between the strong Jazz scene Leeds has boasted for so long now and the rich palate of British electronic music. Featuring collaborations with some very close friends the forthcoming EP ‘Distill’ offers eclectic sound drawing influence from house, breakbeat, jazz and west african music. After the release of “Without You” Feat. Slip Martin, Lo Vu has received playlist support from DJ’s across Europe and America. Following this, Lo Vu released “Maybe” Featuring long time collaborator K.O.G. Fusing electronic music with Afro Beat and High life, “Maybe” is a synthesis between the electronic musical background that informed Lo Vu and the rich culture K.O.G has always championed. The song received playlist support from DJs across europe as well as BBC introducing Track of the Week. It was also featured on BBC Orbit, a new forum for fresh releases. Alice Kim Alice Kim might be carving her path in the world of alternative-indie and RnB, but her sound is universal: intimate, relatable and unapologetically human. If her music feels like it knows you, it’s because she’s singing straight from the heart. Hailing from a small Midlands village, Kim’s early musical education came from her parents’ eclectic record collection, stacks of friends' burnt CDs, and endless hours with the family hi-fi system. When she moved to Leeds aged 18, Kim experimented writing on second-hand broken keyboards and cracked versions of Abelton. With her soulful vocals, Kim began to create a sound that was stripped back in it's production, but fully emotive in it's delivery. Kim's Debut EP, PLAYER TWO, unveils her vulnerability, showcasing a certain maturity that comes with over a decade of understanding herself as an artist. Kim explores the uncertainty and milestones of being in your late 20s, with warm production and soulful emotionally charged songwriting that feels both fresh and familiar. More about FRESH Thursdays... SOMATICS & LISTENING TO THE WHOLE PERSON: Exploring Hanna’s Somatics | The Academy SPACE

Cultural Experiences
This 3.5-hour workshop explores what ‘Somatics’ is, with a focus on what it might mean to you as a counsellor (or other listening helper) and to your understanding of yourself, and your clients, as embodied beings. As well as some practical skills designed to help you feel more at ease in your own body (e.g. when sat for long hours with clients), you’ll get an outline of what Clinical Somatic Education is, and its key insights and practical uses. The workshop stresses the importance of not seeing Somatics as an ‘add-on’ involving ‘the body’, but as an important way of understanding the whole person as embodied. Exploring the significance of physiological stress responses in humans, and the importance of self-sensing to create change, you’ll learn how sensing and movement combine in Somatics to move individuals away from stress, pain, and trauma, and towards greater suppleness, freedom, and ease. We’ll consider the relationship of Somatic Education concepts to experiences (& labels) such as ‘anxiety’, ‘depression’, ‘stress’, ‘chronic pain’ and ‘MUS’ (medically unexplained symptoms). You’ll also discover what Hanna’s concept of the ‘soma’ shares with Carl Rogers’ ideas and Gendlin’s Focusing practice, and the relevance of Peter Levine’s development of Somatic Experiencing®. Somatics can shed light on why chronic tightness, tension, and pain (including e.g. ongoing back pain, tight shoulders, hip pain and more), MUS, and other ‘conditions’ or ‘syndromes’ confound not only medical and healthcare professionals but also many mental health professionals and therapists. It also helps explain why so many of us still feel ‘stuck’—in emotions, in discomfort, in pain, in trauma—even when we’ve talked through issues, and even when we’ve made significant ‘breakthroughs’ in counselling or psychotherapy. In practical terms, you’ll: be invited to experience specific stress response patterns in your own body (or ‘soma’); learn the technique Hanna Somatics uses to ease out of tightness and pain, into more ease; consider how this can improve your own comfort in your practice and in your life, and also discuss how Somatics—and a somatic awareness—might inform your work with clients and your understanding of them as embodied, neuromuscular beings. The workshop will be especially beneficial to anyone who wants to feel more at ease in their own body; for those who work with trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, and MUS; and for anyone wanting to explore more about the embodied, somatic nature of the whole person. Samantha Holland, PhD (Cultural Studies, 2001) is a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator, Certified Essential Somatics® Movement Teacher, RSME (ISMETA-registered Somatic Movement Educator), BFRP (Bach remedies), with MAs in Philosophy (1994), Communication Studies (1996), & Nature (Philosophy & Anthrozoology) (2013). A university lecturer in the UK & US for many years, she also practised as a barrister, volunteered overseas for several years, then obtained a Foundation course & Certificate in Counselling from Academy SPACE in Sheffield. She continued her training and volunteering at Share Psychotherapy and Cruse, with the goal of practising as an existential psychotherapist. Then her life changed: she resolved almost all her long-term chronic pain in a matter of weeks after discovering Hanna Somatics, and soon thereafter shifted her path to train in Somatic Education, to share this remarkable work with others. Her interest in counselling & psychotherapy endures: her Somatics practice is Polyvagal Theory informed (including regular group supervisions with Deb Dana) and Somatic Experiencing® Informed. As at December 2024, she's just completing the three-year Somatic Experiencing® professional training. In addition to the various requirements to qualify as an SEP, Samantha studied chronic pain and long Covid in-person with Peter Levine for five days in 2024. She works as a Clinical Somatic Educator in the Scottish Highlands (where she also runs a bookshop), online, and sometimes in Sheffield. An active member of the US-based Association for Hanna Somatic Education, she runs an innovative online programme for counsellors, coaches and therapists interested in how Somatic approaches can help them and their clients. Please note, the advertised start time is when our doors will open, generally music starts one hour after doors. --- Jali Bakary “An exceptional purveyor of the Gambian tradition” - Afropop Worldwide Jali Bakary is the grandson and son, respectively, of the legendary Gambian kora players Alhaji Bai Konte (who helped to bring kora music to the wider world with his iconic album Kora Melodies From the Republic of the Gambia, West Africa in 1973) and Dembo Konte. As Banning Eyre has put it, “it is difficult to overstate the regal, nearly divine, stature” of the Konte family in the echelons of West African music. Born into this remarkable musical lineage and steeped in Gambia’s griot tradition, Jali Bakary is the latest torchbearer for his family’s kora legacy on the world stage. He has performed extensively throughout West and North Africa, as well as in the UK and the rest of Europe (WOMAD, Roskilde Festival, the Barbican). Although the kora tradition has changed a lot over the last half a century, it has never stayed still. Like his father and grandfather before him, Jali Bakary brings his own personal touch and innovations to traditional songs with unique melodic and rhythmic arrangements. A hugely versatile musician, he regularly performs solo, as well as with his own band, Minyanta, and Balimaya Project - a new 13 piece collective who fuse West-African folkloric music and jazz. Jali Bakary released his debut album, Konteh Kunda, in 2010 and currently lives in London. He will soon be releasing his second solo album. As Banning Eyre has put it, “it is difficult to overstate the regal, nearly divine, stature” of the Konte family in the echelons of West African music. Listen here — Dana Sipos Acclaimed Canadian songwriter Dana Sipos inhabited the far north before going nomad and her captivatingly nuanced songs are filled with a wild wind and a haunting surrealism. Described as "slightly strange and completely mesmerizing" (Gold Flake Paint UK), Sipos’ talent for earthen imagery, rich spiralling vocals, and textured instrumentation sets the stage for a deeply moving performance. A consummate performer, Sipos has brought her unique brand of cosmic folk to concert halls, living rooms and festival stages across North America, Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Her 2021 release, The Astral Plane was lauded as a " mesmerizing jewel of an album" (No Depression) and garnered Sipos a Solo Artist of the Year nomination at the 2022 Canadian Folk Music Awards. With a new collection of captivating songs that hold the complexity of the human experience up to the light, her new album Golden Molten will be released in 2025.
