We follow the Shropshire Way along the river and then climb steadily up out of the gorge, we then head along Benthall edge and around to Benthall Hall. From here we walk across the fields towards Benthall and head back into the woods at Workhouse coppice and around to Pattens Rock quarry where we descend the steps and join the railway line back almost to Ironbridge and then at the lime kilns we take the higher dragons path back to the Ironbridge. From Ironbridge, we follow the old railway towards Coalford, through Lloyd’s Head to Jackfield, uncovering the reasons for, and evidence of, slippage and the various attempts to repair and stabilise the landscape over many years. We cross the river via the Memorial Bridge and return to Ironbridge along the Lloyds. Grade of Walk:Easy Length:4 miles Pace:Leisurely Terrain:Good paths and tracks, and very few steps. Generally the walk is level with only a few short climbs. Some sections may be muddy. Please be aware that the second half of the walk involves walking along the Lloyds which only has limit footways. We start with a stroll through the formal gardens of Dale End Park and then take a tour of the park before heading along Station Road to the Cinder Hill and on to the Damson Orchard and Quaker Burial Ground. At Darby Road we head down to the Furnace Pool and then along the Lydebrook towards Oil House Coppice walking through the Community Orchard before climbing up through the woods to Rough Park. We cross the meadow and re enter the woods to explore the Sabbath Walks and on to Lodge Field. From here we make our way down into Ironbridge via Sunnyside Gardens. We cross the Ironbridge and head along the Severn Valley Way to cross the river again at the Free Bridge and walk up past the Bedlam Furnaces and up through Jockey Bank Gardens. We descend again down Hillside and St Luke’s Road to join Madeley Road and then into The Bartlett Memorial Garden and down Severnside to follow the river under the bridge and onto the wharfage. We cross over and climb up to New Road and down again to Dale End. We leave Ironbridge on The Shropshire Way before dropping towards Buildwas and Farley through fields and woodland to Homer. We climb Wenlock Edge, dropping at Smokey Hole, to continue under The Edge. We climb again to Presthope and on to Bourton where we stop at the church for lunch. We then follow field paths, picking up the line of the old railway and back to Much Wenlock. We return to Ironbridge via the remains of Arlescott Medieval Village, Benthall Hall and Benthall Woods. Lovely views throughout. Taking a woodland path we climb out of the gorge via steps and then a meadow, to reach Workhouse Coppice and the jitties of Broseley wood. After exploring several of these we loop up into town, exploring the town and the High Street before dropping towards Jackfield through woodland. We loop around Jackfield then return to Ironbridge via the old railway. From the Toll we cross the Ironbridge and head to Little Wenlock where we make a short stop at the church before heading to Leighton to join the River Severn. We follow the ‘S’ bends of the river to Cressage Bridge and on to Cressage Church for lunch. We continue on to Sheinton passing through Bannister’s Coppice and up towards Farley Quarry. We take our final short stop here, before making our way to Wyke and down through Banghams Wood, joining the River Severn at Buildwas Bridge to walk along the river back to the start. This is a lovely walk from Coalport. It starts on the Silkin way and around the golf course using footpaths and crossing fields to arrive in the sleepy village of Kemberton. From here we pass through an avenue of wild flowers (hopefully springing up again next year), onto Evelith Mill picking up a path that takes us into the centre of Shifnal. Here we will stop for lunch in the sensory garden, public toilets are close by and an array of local shops. We will then head out eastward to find a footpath leading back down to Evelith mill. Here we pick up a trail of paths and roads to take us through the stunning Grindleforge, past Harrington Hall and on to Sutton Maddock church & lakes. It is then a lovely last couple of miles down through Sutton Woods. Join Amber and Jackie for a walk from Dale End Park through the woods and into the Beeches and Lodge Local Nature Reserves. This slow amble through a variety of different habitats hopes to capture some of the beautiful dawn chorus songs and calls. Although not experts in bird song, we will utilise our knowledge (and technology) to have a go at identifying some of the birds around us, there will be a break in the nature reserves to enjoy some orange juice and a croissant for those who would like, before returning into Ironbridge ready to continue the day! We start with a climb out of the Gorge, up and over Beeches Field taking in the views, then along Lodge Lane popping into Lodge field before continuing on to Rough Park. Here we make our way down into the valley following the Rough Park way beside the railway line, to join the Ironbridge way towards Little Dawley. At the Castle pools we turn to explore the Dawley Hamlets and Lightmoor, before joining Crackshall Lane to return towards Coalbrookdale through Vanes Coppice, up through Dale Coppice and along the Sabbath walks to the rotunda. We then take the steps back down into Ironbridge, returning along the wharfage to the Tollhouse. Join Marion from the Ironbridge Coracle Trust for a fascinating short walk from the Iron Bridge and Old Coracle Shed, along the Wharfage to the Coracle Trust exhibition at the Green Wood Centre in Coalbrookdale. You will be shown points of interest along the Coracle Trail relating to the Coracle Men of Ironbridge and hear many of the stories they told. We stop at the Tommy Rogers sculpture and sloping beach by the Museum of the Gorge where the coracle trust volunteers will show you how to paddle a coracle. The water here is very safe and slow and you will be attached to your friendly, experienced instructor by rope, so you will be safe and won’t float away down river. If you want to have a go, bring a towel, change of clothes and waterproof sandals, just in case! No obligation to take part, you are welcome to sit and watch the others in the group. We then walk to the Green Wood Centre where you will have a guided tour of the family friendly Coracle Trust exhibition in the New Coracle Shed. Embers café is on site and you can buy lunch there or relax and enjoy a picnic lunch on the grassy bank in front of the New Coracle Shed. We then walk back along the Wharfage to the Iron Bridge. From Ironbridge, we follow the river all the way to Buildwas, then take quiet lanes up to Saplin’s Farm. We cross fields, (look out for the resident herd of deer) with lovely views of the Wrekin ahead, before taking an ancient sunken lane towards Little Wenlock. After looping through the village, we take lunch at Swan Farm Pool, we return to Ironbridge following the Shropshire Way and an old tram way, this time with views of the Shropshire Hills. From Ironbridge we take an old tram way to climb towards Little Wenlock, circling the village to reach an old sunken road that we follow as it develops into a lane, to Leighton. Here we follow a lovely loop of the river to Cressage. After walking through the village we cross fields to pass Belswardyne Hall before dropping down to cross Sheinton Brook. We then follow the brook to climb up through Bannister’s Coppice and across Sheinton Common to pick up the Severn Way, which we follow back into Ironbridge. From Coalport, we climb up through Haywood to join the Monarch’s way before heading east to Sutton Wood itself. We visit various areas of this lovely, old woodland, that banks the River Severn, but that does mean several stepped climbs – taken steadily! We return via Coalport Bridge and the Severn Valley Way through Preenshead to Jackfield Memorial Bridge re-crossing the river back into Coalport. Description: This walk takes us out to Much Wenlock seeing bluebells on the way and through Benthall Woods heading towards Wyke (a treat to do this route in reverse on the 20s) where we pick up the Shropshire Way and the Jack Mytton Way. There will be time for a short stop n Much Wenlock, home of the Olympian Trail, before heading through apple orchards towards Shirlett where there are views of the Shropshire Hills and beyond on a clear day. We make our way towards the stunning woods at Shirlett and on to Willey, heading towards Broseley. In Broseley, we walk across Fiery Fields before passing the Church on the way to Corbett’s Dingle. We walk down the Dingle towards the River Severn and the Boat Inn, where we hope to stop for a quick drink. Crossing the River on the Memorial Bridge, we head up to Lloyds Coppice before dropping down again to cross the Free Bridge and pick up the disused railway line back towards Ironbridge. Join Amber from the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust on a 7 mile walk from the Ironbridge to explore the delights of Lloyd’s Coppice, with a brief stop to explore Madeley, before returning on the Silkin Way and taking in different sections of this wonderful woodland. From the Toll House we go over the bridge, along the Wharfage and up to the Rotunda and Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron. Turning into and up through the woods, we skirt around Little Wenlock and then it is uphill, through Huntingdon Farm. After reaching Forest Glen car park we climb straight up to the top of The Wrekin and Little Hill. Thereafter it is all mostly downhill through Saplins Farm to Buildwas following the river back to start. We leave the gorge via Church hill down into Coalbrookdale and over into Horsehay and it’s fabulous pool via a lovely old trail through the new award winning town of Lightmoor. From here we will make our way over old greenways to the old pools of Dawley and on into Town Park where we can explore and find a good spot for lunch, toilets and maybe a look around the Chelsea gardens. After exploring further pools, we will head out past the old Chimney and onto the Silkin way. This lovely old rail cutting takes us to our penultimate throughway joined at the picturesque medieval Madeley Court. We will then make our way back to Woodside and a final descent into Ironbridge via the old allotments and Beech road. George Maw is perhaps best known locally as one of two brothers who set up Maw and Co. Encaustic Tiles during the 19th century. However, Maw was also a great Victorian polymath with interests in many fields including geology and botany. On this walk, you will explore Maw’s interests, from his original tile factory on Bridge Bank and across Benthall Edge to his home of 30 years, Benthall Hall, where he created a botanical garden. You will discover how his influence stretched the world as well as the great names he rubbed shoulders with. The walk includes steep inclines and steps.
