Nidhi Zak/Aria Eipe is a poet, pacifist and fabulist. Auguries of a Minor God, her first collection, was published with Faber in 2021. A finalist for the Dylan Thomas Prize, John Pollard Foundation International Poetry Prize, Michael Murphy Memorial Prize and the Butler Literary Award, it was chosen as a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, National Poetry Day Recommendation, Shakespeare & Co. Year of Reading Selection, and a Book of the Year by both The Irish Times and The Irish Independent. The session will consist of a talk by Nidhi about her work, and will conclude with a workshop. Music lovers are invited to join classical guitarist Andrew Ryan and virtuoso electric guitarist Darragh O'Connor for an intimate guitar concert at GOMA, on April 19th. Andrew is a final year student in SETU studying the classical guitar and is quickly making a name for himself after winning the Feis Ceoil Senior Guitar in 2024. Joining him on the day for a short set beforehand is Darragh O'Connor. Known for his exceptional fluency, rhythm and mastery of the guitar, Darragh will offer an unforgettable experience of solo instrumental guitar music from his extensive repertoire. Having won the Feis Ceoil Senior Guitar Competition in 2024 and performing a number of successful solo concerts over the last 12 months, he aspires to continue performing after he finishes his studies in May. Darragh O'Connor is a graduate of SETU and is currently pursuing a master's degree in performance at the Cork School of Music. Over the past decade, he has established himself as a sought-after session and live guitarist on the Irish music scene, having honed his craft with bands such as Thank Funk and High Definition. While versatile across various genres, Darragh specialises in instrumental, funk, and jazz guitar, which he teaches at Music Generation Waterford. Located in the Viking triangle of Waterford City, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) aims to foster awareness, understanding and involvement in the visual arts through innovative programmes and inclusive policies. Single session ticket Tuesday 22 April from 3 to 6 Craft a helmet, sword and shield for your viking gonk in this eco-conscious workshop. Step back to the world of Vikings with this fun and creative “Viking Eco-Warrior” workshop, perfect for kids aged 9-12 who love crafting and adventure. In a 2-hour session participants will craft their very own Viking warrior gonk using recycled materials. In a double-session of 2 hours each, participants will craft their very own Viking warrior gonk using recycled materials. This hands-on workshop encourages eco-consciousness and creativity, turning everyday items like old socks, fabric scraps, driftwood and cardboard into a unique Viking puppet. The process focuses on individuality and sustainability, making it ideal for tweens eager to express themselves while connecting with others in a relaxed, friendly environment. Participants will start by creating Viking-inspired accessories, including a sword, shield, and helmet. They’ll stuff the gonk’s body, attach it to a wooden base, and bring it to life with facial features, a beard, and moustache. All parts come together for a fully assembled Viking puppet by the end of the session. For the two hour session, kids will revisit the process, adding more personal touches and unique elements to their creations. Single Session Option (2 Hours): Everything from crafting accessories to assembling the gonk is completed in one engaging session. Participants will explore techniques such as stuffing, gluing, cutting, sculpting pre-made clay horns, leather binding, and shield buffing to create their eco-friendly Viking gonk. Materials include recycled items like driftwood sticks, wool or yarn, iced coffee cup caps, tinfoil, and cardboard, making this a truly sustainable craft. This workshop not only offers a fun and interactive activity but also fosters mindfulness, patience, and a sense of accomplishment. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to create something meaningful while making new friends in a supportive and eco-conscious space.
