Arts Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Great coffee and loose-leaf tea available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that. You can stay until we open to the general public at 9.30am. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. Feel free to bring a snack with you, so long as it's not smelly! The local bakery opposite opens at 8am ish if you want to grab a pastry from them. If you're using a laptop, please have it fully charged for your writing session as we only have one plug socket. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. All materials will be supplied. This workshop is suited to beginners with some sewing experience.Sewing machines are suppliedCost: $40 plus booking fee Lake Mac ArtsMembers $36 plus booking fee What is textile art? An art form that uses textile materials like fabric, yarn, thread, and other fibres as the primary medium to create artistic and decorative objects, encompassing many techniques. It is one of the oldest forms of art in history and has played a part in practical and decorative man-made objects for hundreds of thousands of years. Presented by Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival The Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival is an annual month-long arts festival inspired by the life and work of esteemed artist Sir William Dobell. A former resident of Wangi Wangi, Sir William Dobell is known for his passion, innovation, experimentation and creative excellence. The festival includes a range of events around Lake Macquarie including workshops, presentations and exhibitions addressing various aspects of Dobell's life and work. Image artworks: Flinders Ranges Grass Trees & Pier Group courtesy of artist. About the presenting artist Lorraine Parker is a trained teacher and Quilt Art Judge with the British Isles; 2019. She has entered several juried Quilt Art Exhibitions in Australia and overseas and sold many pieces of her work. Her teaching and sharing of her skills are strong on her agenda. In her work, Lorraine aims to capture the essence of our diverse environment visually and to communicate this. Her background in design influences the underlying structure of her work. She has a fascination with colour and loves placing and manipulating textiles that evoke a sense of nature, place, time or timelessness and to transport the viewer into their own experience. Lorraine believes that a work is successful if it connects and “speaks” to the viewer, evoking emotion. Lorraine's curiosity in using the many forms of textile materials; fibre, yarn, fabric and non-woven and her experimental approach to finding new techniques have resulted in an eclectic, broad range of work, both small and large. Using techniques of applying colour through surface dyeing, painting and printing as well as manipulation of yarns and fabric combined with free motion machine stitching add texture and expression to Lorraine's work. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background. Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of The Milk and pressed to limited edition 7 vinyl. This masterclass will set you firmly on your way to being a crime writer. Your tutor – a former police chief superintendent and now crime writer – will guide you through the nature of the genre and its sub genre, understanding the world of crime, villainy and policing, then we will get on to the actual writing. We will work through how to develop gripping characters, settings, how to plot, write authentic dialogue, and craft twists, arcs and endings. Come prepared for a blistering day and armed with all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask someone who’s done it for real and now makes it up for fiction. The session will be run by Graham Bartlett. After thirty years of policing, whereby Graham Bartlett became Brighton and Hove police’s chief superintendent, a senior homicide detective and a public order and firearms commander, he is now a best-selling crime fiction and non-fiction author, and police and crime advisor. Crow- Avanti Display Taking the form of a music concert, the show begins at twilight, with three musicians arriving for a gig. As the light fades, the atmosphere begins to change. An inventive music score is interrupted by ridiculous acts of conjuring, more Tommy Cooper than David Blane. Reality seems to warp. When full darkness falls, sleight of hand and video projection expand this comic and curious world, suggesting ideas both profound and absurd. Avanti Display is one of the UK’s longest established outdoor performance companies creating over twenty original shows. This production features collaborations with a range of artists: music by Seaming To; words by Lou Glanfield (IOU), dramaturgy by Mark Long (People Show), Audio Visual design by Chris Squire (Impossible Arts). The show was conceived by Bill Palmer, developed and performed by the company: Bill Palmer, Chris Squire, Paschale Straiton, Seaming To and Semay Wu. Zoe Mulford Zoe Mulford is rapidly becoming best-known as the writer of The President Sang Amazing Grace, which has been covered by Joan Baez and by Kronos Quartet featuring Meklit. The song was voted 2018 Song of the Year by Folk Alliance International. Originally from Pennsylvania, she first started performing her own songs while living in North Carolina in the 1990's. Since then, she has released five albums on the cooperative Azalea City Recordings label. She now lives in the North of England and tours on both sides of the Atlantic.
