The West Kirby Bookshop are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed Mexican writer, Guadalupe Nettel to the bookshop, to celebrate the UK publication of her short story collection, The Accidentals (translated by Rosalind Harvey). Join us on Thursday 5th June at 7pm, when Guadalupe will be in conversation about the book, answering questions from the audience, and signing copies of The Accidental. Tickets are £6 general admission or £15 including a copy of the book. Complimentary drinks will be provided on the night. About Guadalupe Nettel: Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican author of award-winning novels and short story collections. Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and adapted for theatre and film. Still Born, her most recent novel, was shortlisted for the 2023 International Booker Prize. In 2008 she received a PhD in Literature from the EHESS in Paris. She has edited cultural and literary magazines such as Número Cero and Revista de la Universidad de México. We are pleased to invite you to the Chippendale School'sGraduate Exhibition and Fine Furniture Sale, running from Thursday the 12th to Saturday the 14th of June 2025. This annual event is a celebration of all the hard work and creativity of this year’s Professional course students over the past 9 months. All furniture and objects on show have been designed and made by the 30 students who have come from around the world to hone their skills at Chippendale. During the show, energy levels can be topped up with refreshments from pop-up brewsters Steampunk Coffee (www.steampunkcoffee.co.uk) from North Berwick and The Big Blu Artisan Pizza (www.thebigblu.co.uk) from Dunbar who will all be serving delicious coffees, cakes and pizza. Led by poet, Grace Wilentz, this workshop will focus on writing poetry in response to Marlay Park. Through a short reading, workshop participants will explore the art of writing about our shared green spaces. We'll then use the group discussion as a springboard for responding in verse through a tailored creative exercise. While no prior experience is necessary, participants will be expected to participate actively in discussions and take part in writing exercises. In return, participants can expect to come away with a new draft poem, and fresh approaches for their creative practice. Grace Wilentz was born in New York City and grew up in Greenwich Village. A graduate of Harvard University, with postgraduate degrees from Oxford University and University College Dublin, she moved to Ireland in 2005 to study the Irish language and became an Irish citizen in 2015. Her first collection, The Limit of Light, was published by The Gallery Press in October 2020 and went on to be named a book of the year in The Irish Independent and The Irish Times. She has received support from The Arts Council including a Literature Bursary and a Next Generation Award. Her most recent collection, Harmony (Unfinished), was published by The Gallery Press in October 2024 and is nominated for the Munster Literature Centre’s Farmgate Award. Join SSAP as we celebrate our Good Ancestors Project, a Black-led artist club and space for creative, collaborative and decolonised activism. The project explores climate and nature through an international lens, focusing on Wales and Africa. This event is part of the Big Green Climate Campaign that runs from 7-15 June. Meet the artists who have created unique, important work on the climate emergency, hear their stories and appreciate the art on display. Enjoy refreshments then take part in our creative workshops where you can make climate conscious art led by our artists. What is Good Ancestors Club? The Good Ancestors Club has brought together African, Welsh and Diaspora creatives who have been learnt new skills and knowledge in the climate and nature emergency and have created new and exciting art works that rally the call for urgent action.
