Jake Xerxes Fussell is a singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC. His intuitivecreative process often draws from traditional music and archival field recordings-incorporating elements of songs from the past into new work. He is, according toAnnPowers of NPR, "maybe the leading interpreter of American folk music right now..." Fussell’s albumWhen I’m Calledwas released to critical acclaim by Fat Possum Records inthe summer of 2024. The album was produced by James Elkington and featuresBlake Mills(guitars), Ben Whiteley (bass), and Joe Westerlund (drums), along with additional vocalsfrom Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb. His most recent recording “Close My Eyes” (a song by the late Americancomposer/cellist/singer Arthur Russell) was released in March of 2025 as a digital single. Fussell and Elkington also wrote and recorded the music forRebuilding, a new feature filmdirected by Max Walker-Silverman that premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. “Fussell’s music often comes with complex citations; he is a folksinger in the truest sense, collecting ideas and melodies and lyrics from distant and disparate traditions, looking for thethings that unite us in our humanity.”-The New Yorker “(Fussell) is one of the great magpies ofAmerican song, collecting forgotten, tarnishedgems with a folklorist’s zeal... his renditions aren’t so much cover versions ascomposites...”–The Guardian Information Source: The Fleece Bristol | eventbrite

Islands. Life on the edge of existence, walled in by the ocean, crucibles of humankind where nature still holds the reins. I’m fascinated by them and had the privilege to work as a vet for many years on four of the British South Atlantic Islands: the Falklands, Ascension, Tristan da Cunha and St Helena. Richly diverse, far-flung remnants of Empire. Each has its own utterly unique story to tell, moulded by history, topography, peoples and climate. The Falklands: a grand archipelago down in the chilly waters near the Antarctic convergence, with rich fisheries, abundant wildlife, and more sheep than the eye can muster. Ascension: an equatorial military base once nicknamed ‘The Cinder’ because of its brutish volcanic landscapes, home to colourful land crabs, and nesting sea turtles, but with a lush central peak, the first example of terraforming. Tristan: the remotest island settlement in the world, a crofting-type community of some 250 hardy souls perched on the brim of a recently active volcano, their livelihoods dependent on harvesting the abundant crayfish that swarm in the kelp forests. And tropical St Helena: the former darling of the East India Company, once the most impregnably fortified place in the world and crammed with built heritage, dramatic scenery and endemic species. Not to forget the oldest known living land animal in the world, Jono the Giant Tortoise, who is approaching his third century. My talk will be a colourful picture fest of land and sea to convey these stories, laced with anecdotes about my great love, the animals. To me, they represent the best of us: innocent and honest, they never lie, they never deceive. I aim to entertain and uplift, to whizz you through these remote communities and provide the ultimate in armchair travelling so… fit that safety harness and buckle up! Please join us for the launch of Resistant Forms , a fully illustrated monograph celebrating the first major survey exhibition of Donald Locke (1930–2010). The launch event will feature a panel discussion with artist Dr Hew Locke OBE RA and art historian Giulia Smith. The conversation will be chaired by exhibition curator and Gasworks Director, Robert Leckie, and will be followed by a Q&A with the audience. Resistant Forms is published on the occasion of Donald Locke’s first major survey exhibition organised by Spike Island, Bristol; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; and Camden Art Centre, London. Charting the development of his work across Guyana, the UK and the United States over five decades, from the mid-1960s to the late 2000s, this richly illustrated volume offers an in-depth exploration of Locke’s expansive practice. Gathering newly commissioned essays by curator Grace Aneiza Ali, artist Eddie Chambers and art historian Giulia Smith alongside an extended introduction by Robert Leckie, Resistant Forms features full-colour plates of the artist’s work, rarely seen material from the artist’s archive and a comprehensive timeline. The book has been designed by London-based studio Wolfe Hall. The exhibition is generously supported by the Ampersand Foundation, Henry Moore Foundation, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Alison Jacques Gallery and the Estate of Donald Locke. We have five years to stop nature’s decline. We know the challenge. Together, we can deliver the solutions. Join us on Thursday, 11 September, at the Bristol Beacon for a day to celebrate nature in the UK, and discuss the action we must take together to restore it. Nature brings immense value to our lives, to the economy and to communities. Whether it's protecting communities from flooding and extreme weather, supporting rural areas and food production, helping us tackle climate change, or improving our mental health – nature underpins it all. At our first Wild Summit, we’ll bring together nature lovers, community campaigners, businesses, politicians, officials, and policy experts for a day of presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and conversations focused on the critical importance of investing in nature. We’ll celebrate the incredible work being done by charities, community groups, innovators, and land managers, as well as exploring the vital roles of tourism, research, upskilling, and corporate and government projects in restoring our natural world. The goal? To help the UK halt and reverse nature's decline by 2030. Why now? The UK has signed an ambitious global agreement to halt and reverse the decline of nature by the end of this decade. However, with just five years left until the deadline, nature is still facing rapid decline. At the Wild Summit, we’ll demonstrate the vital role nature plays in daily lives and the urgent need for large-scale investment and action. What is the Wild Summit all about? The Wild Summit is about coming together to make real change happen. It’s a day for sharing knowledge, forging partnerships, and inspiring action. It’s about celebrating what’s already working, while also asking: how can we do more and do better? Together, we can restore Britain’s natural heritage and safeguard it for generations to come. What can you expect on the day? With over 100 speakers and over 30 sessions, our inaugural Wild Summit will offer an extensive range of keynote presentations, partner events, panel discussions and practical workshops on everything from nature friendly farming to freshwater, planning policy to natural capital. We will be joined by partners and speakers from major environmental groups, including the RSPB, National Trust, WWF UK, Marine Conservation Society and many more as well as celebrities and experts in the fields of planning, landscape restoration, water policy, access to nature, agriculture and biodiversity for a packed main stage programme. Welcome to Spark's tailored workshop that shows you exactly what AI means for your creative business, how to embrace it in the design process, and practical advice on how to move forwards. When we talk to creative businesses, we often find that while they know AI is going to change our industry, they are not clear on what the impact is likely to be, how they can embrace AI themselves, and how they can get started on the AI journey. Many creatives feel overwhelmed by AI, worry it will undermine their creativity, and are unsure how to integrate it into their creative processes without losing the human touch that defines their work. What you will learn This workshop from Jules Love ( Spark AI ) demystifies AI, and gives you straight forward, practical advice on how to get started. It covers: · What really is Generative AI, and why do you need to embrace it to compete? · What are the big creative agencies using Generative AI for, and where is this all going? · What are some of the tools out there for text, images and video? · How can you get the best out of ChatGPT and Midjourney for creative tasks? · How do you embed AI-augmentation throughout the creative workflow? · How is this going to change the industry, and what can we do to remain competitive? · What are the risks around data privacy and IP? · How do you get started operationalising it in your team? This four-hour session turns pessimism about the future with AI into optimism and enthusiasm to get started, with a practical path forwards. Who is this workshop for? This workshop is ideal for agency leaders, creative teams and freelancers at the early stages of AI adoption. It’s perfect for those just exploring the possibilities of AI, and those looking to move from experimenting with it to truly operationalising it. Where is it? Join us in person at Origin Workspace in Bristol for an afternoon filled with insightful talks, hands-on practice, and networking opportunities. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn, connect, and be inspired! Information Source: Bristol Creative Industries | eventbrite
