Rebellion 1776: An Evening with Laurie Halse Anderson | The Book Stall

Cultural Experiences
The Book Stall is thrilled to welcome celebrated author Laurie Halse Anderson on Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30 pm for an in-store discussion featuring her new book, Rebellion 1776 . From New York Times bestselling author comes an eerily timely historical middle grade adventure about a girl struggling to survive amid a smallpox epidemic, the public’s fear of inoculation, and the seething Revolutionary War. This book is perfect for kids ages 10 to 14. This is a ticketed event. There are two versions of the tickets: Admit One and Admit Two. Both include a copy of Rebellion 1776 . The author will be happy to sign your book. More About the Book: In the spring of 1776, thirteen-year-old Elsbeth Culpepper wakes to the sound of cannons. It’s the Siege of Boston, the Patriots’ massive drive to push the Loyalists out that turns the city into a chaotic war zone. Elsbeth’s father—her only living relative—has gone missing, leaving her alone and adrift in a broken town while desperately seeking employment to avoid the orphanage. Just when things couldn’t feel worse, the smallpox epidemic sweeps across Boston. Now, Bostonians must fight for their lives against an invisible enemy in addition to the visible one. While a treatment is being frantically fine-tuned, thousands of people rush in from the countryside begging for inoculation. At the same time, others refuse protection, for the treatment is crude at best and at times more dangerous than the disease itself. Elsbeth, who had smallpox as a small child and is now immune, finds work taking care of a large, wealthy family with discord of their own as they await a turn at inoculation. But as the epidemic and the revolution rage on, will she find her father? More About the Author: Laurie Halse Anderson is a New York Times bestselling author known for tackling tough subjects with humor and sensitivity. She’s twice been a National Book Award finalist, for Chains and Speak ; Chains also received the 2009 Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Laurie was chosen for the 2009 Margaret A. Edwards Award and received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2023, presented to her by the Crown Princess of Sweden. She lives in Pennsylvania, and you can visit her at MadWomanintheForest.com . Lecture #3: Between Two Fires: America in the War of 1812 As a global war raged between Napoleonic France and Great Britain, the fledging United States found itself caught in the middle of the maelstrom. Insulted by both sides and forced to carefully tread its own path, American internal political interests clashed as well, eventually leading to a declaration of war against its former colonial overlord. Begun with towering confidence and far too much bravado, the War of 1812 quickly humbled the United States; a string of disastrous campaigns culminated with the burning of the capital in 1814. Examining these campaigns as well as the leaders on both sides of the Atlantic will place the war in its international context, why defeat did not engender disgrace, and how the United States emerged from the war more assured of its future than ever before. All lectures take place at the Rob Morris Chapel, 207 W. Jefferson on the Oldham County History Center campus. $35 per person, includes dinner. Programs are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Limited seating. Welcome to the What's Popp'N Fundraiser! My name is Kurtis Zeiger, and I am the co-founder of What’s Popp’N, an innovative app designed to transform how people connect with their surroundings. I’ve launched this venture alongside my brother, Matthew Zeiger, who brings a wealth of experience from his background in law enforcement. Matthew began his career with the Chicago Police Department, where he served in various specialized units, including the Tactical Unit, the Bureau of Counterterrorism/Narcotics Division, and the ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Task Force. We’ve both been proud to call Mt. Greenwood home for our entire lives. Growing up here, we’ve witnessed the incredible strength of community and the powerful potential that arises when neighbors come together. In my career as a 134 Union electrician, I’ve learned the importance of hard work, teamwork, and dedication—values that are at the core of this new venture. In early 2024, we officially founded What’s Popp’N , a groundbreaking app designed to revolutionize how users discover events, venues, and connections. With real-time live feeds and updates, the app helps users find the perfect vibe—whether it’s a lively bar, a relaxed hangout, or an exciting event. From karaoke nights to exclusive specials, What’s Popp’N ensures users stay informed and connected. The concept for What’s Popp’N was developed in 2019 to attract investors, but marketing efforts were deferred until the patent was finalized in 2024. Currently in its prototype stage, the app is set to launch soon, with robust measures in place to protect its originality and ensure its success in the market But our app isn’t just about events—it’s about building connections. One of our standout features is our revolutionary dating tool. Here’s how it works: when you enter a venue, your profile becomes visible to others there and disappears when you leave. Users can send one thoughtful message, fostering genuine, respectful interactions. The user then will have to wait on a response, and if not interested, no hard feelings- just keep it classy and try again. Good vibes only! This feature prioritizes quality over quantity, making real-life connections more meaningful. And this is just the beginning. While we’re starting with bars, we plan to expand to restaurants, gyms, airports, concert venues, and more. Wherever life takes you, What’s Popp’N will help you find the right vibe, a great event, or even your next meaningful connection. This idea has been years in the making, and with the support of our community, we’re turning this dream into a reality. To fully develop and launch the app, we’re inviting local businesses, families, and individuals to participate in supporting this vision for the future. Food, drinks, and music included with purchase! This includes a dinner buffet, Miller Light, Coors Light, Budlight, Budweiser, and house wine for the entire event. Also, do not forget to bring cash for the great raffle baskets and more. https://www.whatspoppn.info/ Information Source: Kurtis Zeiger | eventbrite
