Join Rise Up! A monthly celebration of poetry (and 'lucky dip' open mic) on Wednesday 29th November at 8pm at Bluebird Bakery in Acomb. This month's event features three talented poets: Suzanne Batty, Yvie Holder, and Katy Mahon. Suzanne Batty, an acclaimed poet, has published two collections with Bloodaxe Books. Her most recent work, States of Happiness, was handpicked by Jackie Kay as one of her Books of the Year for The Guardian. Suzanne, who received a Northern Writers Award for Poetry in 2022, is currently exploring the intersection between verse and prose through a play and poetry collection. Yvie Holder draws on her UK and Caribbean heritage to create poetry that delves into themes of memory, migration, love, loss, and place. As the winner of the Helen Cadbury Poetry Prize 2021, Yvie's work has been published in various journals and anthologies. Katy Mahon, a published poet in Irish and English journals, recently saw her poems featured in Black Nore Review, Free the Verse, and HOWL New Irish Writing. Her debut chapbook, 'Some Indefinable Cord', was published in 2022. The event will also offer book and pamphlet sales, as well as the opportunity for three lucky participants to perform their own poem in the open mic segment. To express your interest in reading your poem, please email rise@bluebirdbakery.co.uk with your name, email address, and contact number. The event offers tiered ticketing options to ensure affordability, with tickets priced at £10 and a limited number available at £5. All poets are paid from door sales. Tickets can also be purchased at Bluebird Bakery in Acomb. Doors will open at 8pm, with performances beginning at 8.30pm. Don't miss this exciting evening of poetry. Hosted by Nicky Kippax and Elizabeth Chadwick Pywell, both poets and Northern Writer Award winners, Rise Up! is the perfect platform to celebrate the power of poetry.
