Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits | Auckland Art Gallery
Sep 18, 2024–Nov 29, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Representations of tūpuna, ancestors, hold profound significance in te ao Māori, the Māori world. They embody customary cultural values including mana, tapu and mauri (prestige, sacredness and life force) and hold the ancestral ties of whakapapa. For centuries, representations of tūpuna were given form through whakairo (carving). The mediums of painting and photography were adopted from the mid-19th century for this purpose, with these new forms of portraiture congregating among or standing in place of whakairo in whare tūpuna (ancestral meeting houses) and their modern equivalents.
Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits brings together whakairo and oil paintings from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, offering insights into the significance of tūpuna representations within te ao Māori. ‘Ngā taonga’ means many treasures while ‘tūturu’ signifies something permanent, true and original. This exhibition considers the inherent cultural values embodied and expressed within and through these taonga from a te ao Māori view.
One of the most prolific portraitists of the late 19th and early 20th-century, Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings acknowledge the mana and self-determination of tūpuna through his respectful evocation of their likeness. They were widely commissioned by Māori and Pākehā (European New Zealander) alike. The portraits in this exhibition radiate outwards from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, representing iwi (tribe) and hapū (subtribe) from throughout the motu (island). Recalling a whare tupuna, the gallery resonates with the mauri of these tūpuna.
The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity | Auckland Art Gallery
Feb 9, 2024–Feb 1, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity celebrates the monumental gift of significant artworks from the collection of New York philanthropists Julian (1932–2022) and Josie Robertson (1943–2010) to the Gallery.
The donation comprises 15 works by influential modern European artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Henri Fantin-Latour, Paul Gauguin, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso.
Beginning with the suggestive nude bodies of the late 19th century and ending with a monumental colour-field painting from the 1960s, The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity takes visitors on a journey through the major art movements of the modern era, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, and post-war abstraction.
Featuring 49 paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, the exhibition also includes visitor favourites from the permanent collection as well as loans and other important recent acquisitions, offering a broad survey of the best of late-19th- and early-to-mid 20th-century international art.

Jenny Holzer | STATEMENT – Truisms + | Auckland Art Gallery
Mar 27, 2024–Apr 26, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Jenny Holzer’s text works, called Truisms, were first executed as pithy and sometimes provocative slogans on the streets of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s as stickers, t-shirts and posters, with the intention of taking art out of the museum and into public life. Holzer quickly converted these statements to the media of advertising and public communication with a series of pivotal LED signs, most famously in New York’s Times Square.
Holzer’s use of electronic technology is, she says, motivated by ‘needing to be where people look’. Hanging suspended from the ceiling of the Gallery’s South Atrium, in STATEMENT – Truisms +, 2015 iconic statements like ‘ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE’ and ‘ENSURE THAT YOUR LIFE STAYS IN FLUX’ cascade and flash in speech-like pulsating rhythms and rainbow spectrums of colour, seemingly with a life of their own.
Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa | Auckland Art Gallery
Apr 20, 2024–Jun 7, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Taimoana | Coastlines explores the art of Aotearoa New Zealand, locating it within Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the wider Pacific region. Taking the concept of the coast, or shoreline, as a starting point, the exhibition navigates a sea of ideas, offering multiple perspectives on New Zealand art through a selection of works from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
The coast is central to the way of life of many in Aotearoa New Zealand and it has been throughout our entire history. Integral to te ao Māori, the Māori world, the interconnectedness of land and sea is reflected in cultural narratives and practices. The coast is at times a source of sustenance and employment, at others a route for travel, a space of recreation, conflict, well-being or inspiration, but also, as the climate continues to change, at the frontline of danger. The coast is a threshold, an in-between zone, a perpetually shifting meeting point of land and sea that prompts us to examine our relationships with both.
In this exhibition, artists from the 18th century to today ride the oceans’ currents, traversing themes from the enormity of the Pacific to the vessels that have crossed its expanse and plied Aotearoa’s coasts, and exploring their personal responses to the shore as well as the legacies of colonial encounters and conflict.
Threads of Time: Travel, Trade & Textiles | Auckland Art Gallery
Sep 2–Nov 15, 2025 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Threads of Time: Travel, Trade & Textiles is a jewel-box display in the historic Mackelvie Gallery that offers a survey of European art from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Presenting for the first time new acquisitions and recent donations to our Auckland audiences, this exhibition also showcases beloved paintings and sculptures from the permanent collection, some of which have not been on display for several years. Five thematically-driven, Salon-style hangs underline the sumptuous materiality of fabrics, both as depicted subjects in art and as physical supports that sometimes peek through a painting’s layers of pigment and varnish.
Products of technology and trade, fabrics are cultural artefacts. They are also markers of social status and expressions of individual taste and sentiment. As such, their depiction in paintings, sculpture and works on paper is the outcome of precise negotiations between artist and client. Interpreting works from the permanent collection through this social and historical lens, Threads of Time explores how fabrics can offer insight into the interwoven threads of fashion, art and identity in the politics and cultures of the past.
Gothic Returns: Fuseli to Fomison | Auckland Art Gallery
Sep 2–Nov 16, 2025 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Gothic Returns: Fuseli to Fomison explores the persistent appeal of ‘the gothic’, a broad term that embraces some of the most darkly charismatic imagery ever produced.
Incorporating all things unsettling, mysterious, sombre and downright scary, this genre has its origins in the late 18th-century British Romantic movement. First defined by the medievalising novels of Horace Walpole (1717–1797) and the disturbingly sensual paintings of Swiss artist Henry Fuseli (1741–1825), it has since proven almost virus-like in its capacity to adapt and thrive across the centuries. Whatever outward form it assumes, the gothic has also shown itself remarkably true to its essential character: ominous moods, unsettling themes and a melancholy engagement with the past. Sometimes dormant but never fully extinct, the gothic impulse seems ready to resurface at uneasy junctures in history.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, it manifested in the early 1990s in cinema, art and fiction at a time of reckoning with the nation’s colonial record. The moment was subsequently hailed by cultural commentators as the birth of the ‘New Zealand Gothic’, but – as many have noted – precursors lurk everywhere in New Zealand art. Few collections are as well placed as Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki’s to engage with the gothic in its early and later manifestations.
Drawing upon iconic works from across the collection by the genre’s founders as well as by their contemporary Antipodean counterparts, Gothic Returns: Fuseli to Fomison unites old with new, playfully inviting viewers to enter the ever-enticing dark side of the imagination.

What Is A Hyaluron Pen?
Simply put, The Pen is the future. It allows anyone with the proper training to provide their clients with a Hyaluronic Acid Treatment. This can be done on lips, deep lines and provides a revitalization treatment for the face. HA forms a super hydrating net over the skin and delivers water to parched skin over time. Hyaluronic Acid is known to have an amazing water-binding capacity, making it ideal for skin hydration and that means the skin is continuously hydrated, plump and healthy.
HA TREATMENTS ARE NOW A REALITY THANKS TO ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY. USING HYALURONIC ACID BASED PRODUCTS, OUR CUTTING EDGE TECHNIQUE CAN TRANSFORM YOUR SERVICES YOU OFFER TO YOUR CLIENTS.
What is involved in the procedure?
The procedure is quite simple and the HA used is safe as the human body produces the exact same acid, it is pretty impossible that anyone would get any sort of allergic reaction or complication from the HA itself. The more Hyaluronic Acid there is inside the Epidermis layer of the skin, the more water is retained keeping its moisture and making the appearance of the skin more youthful.
Hyaluron Pen … applies HA.
How much can you charge for the procedure?
Based on your state, area of location and techniques you do. Minimum price to charge as a New Technician is $300 and as you become skilled in your craft you can charge up to $500 for 1 ml of Hyaluronic Acid. This is great for 30 minutes of work!
