Beavers are Back! With a Little Help from their Friends | Fall River Visitor Center
After decades of near-absence in much of Rocky Mountain National Park, beaver are reclaiming their key role in the ecology of the park’s streams.
In this course, we'll discuss the return of beavers to RMNP, as well as beaver ecology and the interrelationships with elk, moose, birds, and fish. We will also discuss what we might expect in the future as gray wolves are restored to Colorado. Participants should plan to spend the day outdoors and will encounter marshy areas and shallow water while visiting beaver ponds. Be prepared to “wade wet” or bring waterproof boots for the time in the field.
Who:
Participants ages 16 and up.
Program level
: Moderate – These programs are most appropriate for those with some hiking experience. Expect to travel 1 to 2 miles over the course of the program and to be on your feet for several hours at a time. Participants should be comfortable navigating maintained trails, unmaintained meadows, and marshy areas. Prior experience hiking or walking above 8,000 feet is recommended.
This program has a classroom session and a field session.

Meet at the Fall River Visitor Center, 3450 Fall River Road, Estes Park, CO 80517, and travel together to various locations within RMNP in Conservancy vehicles. All required fees and permits for park entry are included in your registration.

About Your Instructor
: Gary Miller retired from Rocky Mountain National Park in 2013 after working as both a naturalist/interpreter and as a biologist during the early years of the Elk-Vegetation Management implementation. Prior to that, he held positions with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (now Colorado Parks and Wildlife) including wildlife researcher, research leader and statewide ecologist. During that time, he conducted or oversaw research and management of both game and nongame species, including their ecology, population dynamics, diseases, and restoration of native species.

KNOW MORE To better plan your JLF experience, please make note of the following: ~ Assisted listening devices for the Canyon Theater or the Skyscapse venues are available on a first-come-first-served basis from the Library Accounts Desk on the right, just inside the Arapahoe entrance to the Library. You will need to leave your Driver’s License (or other official form of ID) in order to check out a device. ~ FOOD available at the Library: Scrumptious lunches and snacks will be available for sale on Saturday and Sunday from the Jaipur Restaurant in the lobby of the Library’s south entrance from noon till 3 pm. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be available for purchase in the Library Cafe throughout the weekend.

Join us for an evening mixer at Wibby Brewing! One Drink Ticket is included in the package price. The event starts at 4:30 PM. Be advised that Wibby Brewing does not serve food. However, they are known to host food trucks outside. Then join us for a 7 PM Kickoff at Longmont High School Football Field, adjacent to LHS. Opponent: Siver Creek HS. Admission included in our package price. Those wishing not to attend the football game are free to continue socializing at Wibby.

Buffet style menu is to be determined - likely Italian with gluten-free/vegetarian options. We’ve reserved the full restaurant and patio. This is a private event and will be closed to the public. Our venue will have games such as Corn Hole, Ax Throwing, VR Escape Room, Billiards, and two hours of a Golf Simulator. We will likely have a 20-30 minute program and possible dancing.Alcoholic beverages are not provided but will be available for purchase at the bar.

We are the Colorado Brewery Running Series™ and we run for beer!Join us for the Waldschänke Ciders 5k on September 13, 2025, for a 5k-ish, fun run event that starts and ends at this awesome taproom in Denver. Run, walk, jog - whatever goes! Complete the course and celebrate with us and a FREE, local craft cider at the finish line. Start windows will be available at 10:00 AM & 10:30 AM. Each runner/walker will need to start during their 30-minute start wave window.
