This year's tour will feature several elegant homes and a historic cultural institution in Oak Bluffs . This year only, the tour welcome "site" and tour start will be located at Union Chapel, 55 Narragansett Ave, Oak Bluffs (instead of the customary Cottagers Corner location on Pequot Ave). A tour map and further instructions will be provided at the welcome site. (Note: Cottagers Corner located at 57 Pequot Ave, Oak Bluffs is currently under renovations.) The Cottagers House Tour has been a highlight of the Martha’s Vineyard summer season for nearly 40 years. The Tour features magnificent Oak Bluffs homes, each featuring an elegance that is unique. Some homes on the Tour are quite large and grand. Others are small and spectacular. Some have unique landscaping and interior designs. Others have fabulous water views. Some are brand new. And, others have long and fascinating histories. Each house has a special story to tell. You don’t want to miss it. Founded in 1956, The Cottagers, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of 100 African American women homeowners on Martha’s Vineyard. The organization is featured in the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., in the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and on the Martha’s Vineyard African American Heritage Trail. The Cottagers raise funds to support charitable, educational and community service projects that improve the quality of life on the island. Among the beneficiaries of the Cottagers’ support are Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Island Food Pantry, Oak Bluffs Police Department, Harbor Homes, and the Boys and Girls Club of Martha’s Vineyard. In addition, the organization has awarded more than 100 college scholarships to seniors graduating from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. A’Lelia Bundles will discuss her new book, Joy Goddess, and share the scintillating story of the pioneering glamour and cultural patronage of her great-grandmother, after whom she was named, the hair-care heiress and Harlem Renaissance socialite A'Lelia Walker. Born in 1885, A'Lelia spent her early years in poverty until her mother, washerwoman Sarah Breedlove, refashioned herself as Madam C.J. Walker, purveyor of the Wonderful Hair Grower and the first female self-made millionaire in America. Bringing A'Lelia out from under her mother's shadow (during her lifetime she faced down unfavorable comparisons to her mother's business acumen, and the two had a contentious fire and ice relationship), Bundles shows that the heiress had a gift for creating distinctive events that surprised even blasé New York. A'Lelia hosted landmark soirées at her inherited Westchester County mansion and founded both the Walker Salon, one of Harlem's most popular venues for private parties, and the Dark Tower, a cultural salon named after a Countee Cullen poem where her downtown friends joined her uptown friends. A'Lelia's guests, cutting-edge musicians, artists, and poets to high-ranking African Americans in the federal government, created a potent and unprecedented cultural mix.
