Arts Film
ABOUT THIS FILM SCREEN: Studio Theatre RUNNING TIME: 1H 45 m AGE RATING: 12 + IMDb: 6.8/10 Between 6:30pm and 7:00pm, just before the main feature, we’ll be showcasing a film by a talented London emerging filmmaker. Barbie (2023) Barbie follows the story of Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie), who lives a seemingly perfect life in Barbieland , a vibrant, matriarchal world where every day is flawless and every night is a dance party. When strange imperfections begin disrupting her perfect routine—such as flat feet and thoughts of death—Barbie sets off into the real world with Ken (Ryan Gosling) to discover the truth about herself and the source of the disturbance. In Los Angeles, she encounters the messy complexity of human life, including sexism, self-doubt, and the struggles of identity, while Ken discovers patriarchy and tries to import it back into Barbieland. The film becomes both a hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy and a sharp cultural satire, exploring themes of femininity, consumerism, patriarchy, and self-acceptance . Ultimately, Barbie must choose between staying in her dreamlike world or embracing the imperfect, authentic reality of being human. Information Source: University of East London | eventbrite

Join us for an informal evening of discovery and discussion, with Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood, author and founder of Colonna Coffee, on variety of the scientific research projects he has been involved in across the coffee industry. Maxwell began collaborating with scientists and academia in 2014, teaming up with Christopher H. Hendon who was at the University of Bath at the time. Together, they published a paper on waters impact on coffee extraction and their book 'Water for Coffee'. This was followed with research on grinding at different temperatures, sensory studies and life cycle studies, among others. Coffee is a field where scientific understanding can be applied very successfully, but it is also problematic as it is a subjective field. Scientifically we often study a phenomenon, and then the coffee industry takes this understanding and makes its mind up regarding what is good. Join the discussion as we explore how coffee ends up being a rabbit hole for many scientifically minded people as each cup of coffee is a combination of many changing variables, making it a more challenging subject to comprehensively understand than it may appear! Maxwell Dashwood's fascination with coffee began in Melbourne, Australia, in 2007. Returning to the UK, he co-managed a coffee events company and opened Colonna & Small's, a Bath-based coffee shop with a focus on curated, changing coffee menus. An acclaimed figure in the industry, Maxwell is a three-time winner of the UK Barista Championships and has co-authored academic papers on coffee. He's also the co-author of "Water For Coffee," a study on the impact of water on coffee taste, and "The Coffee Dictionary," an accessible guide to coffee terminology. His most recent book, "The Business of Specialty Coffee," combines his business experiences with an exploration of the coffee supply chain. SWINDON SCIENCE CAFE Science Cafes are an informal opportunity to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Rather than a long lecture, you can expect a lively, two-way conversation with a researcher - over a drink or two! Everyone is welcome to come and express their views or just enjoy a drink and listen. No scientific knowledge is needed to take part - just bring your curiosity, and maybe your own bottle of choice. WHEN : The first Tuesday of each month from 7pm - 9pm. WHERE : Innovation Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies (iCAST) Creative Hub located in the iconic Carriage Works. 10 Carriage Works, Unit 7B, London Street, Swindon, SN1 5FBEnter the following three words into the What Three Words app to find the exact location: Front entrance: ///friday.index.solo Rear entrance: ///cups.shell.face REFRESHMENTS: A selection of light refreshments will be available in return for a donation, or you are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks with you. ABOUT THIS EVENT SCREEN: Studio Theatre RUNNING TIME: 2h 13m AGE RATING: (PG) IMDb: 7.8 / 10 Between 6:30pm and 7:00pm, just before the main feature FILM, we’ll be showcasing short films by talented emerging filmmakers. English Vinglish (2012) is a deeply touching and quietly empowering story about identity, respect, and self-discovery. It follows Shashi Godbole, a devoted wife and mother living in India, who is constantly belittled by her family — especially her husband and teenage daughter — for her lack of English fluency. Though she runs a small home-based business making laddoos, her talents and intelligence are overlooked simply because she doesn’t speak the "right" language. When Shashi is unexpectedly called to New York to help with her niece’s wedding, she steps out of her comfort zone and into a new world. Amid the hustle of Manhattan, she secretly enrols in a short-term English class, surrounded by fellow outsiders each trying to find their place in a language-dominated society. As she learns to express herself in English, Shashi also begins to rediscover her confidence, independence, and quiet strength — qualities she had long buried beneath the weight of domestic expectations. Anchored by a luminous performance from Sridevi in her comeback role, English Vinglish is more than a feel-good film — it’s a tender portrait of a woman learning to value herself on her own terms. With humour, grace, and emotional clarity, it explores the universal themes of language, belonging, and the quiet revolutions that begin inside the home. Rusty This four-piece Toronto-based alt-rock band formed in 1994 and their debut full-length studio album ' Fluke ' brought home the 1996 Juno Award for Best Alternative Album. Between 1994 and 2000, the band released three full length studio albums and one EP on Handsome Boy Records, and featured on various compilations and soundtracks before disbanding in late 2000. In 2011, Rusty reformed for the NXNE festival and maintained a presence in the scene, culminating in the 2018 album ‘ Dogs of Canada ’. wEIRD bUG Born in the early days of the pandemic, this Stratford three-piece alt-punk band has a noble heritage, featuring Stratford natives Tim Nicholls and Lennie Haggerty ( Soylent Green , Lungbutter , Sing That Yell That Spell ). With London-based guitar wizard Mike Gibbons bringing a deeply evolved melodic and harmonic energy, the band found their creativity ignited and have been steadily writing original alt-punk-rock songs for a changed world. wEIRD bUG finally burst into the spotlight with their debut show to a sold out audience in May of 2025. Cultural Experiences
Biophilia – Nature’s Blueprint : the 2025 Straw Building UK (SBUK) Symposium brings together designers, makers, policy thinkers and community voices for a full-day gathering in Swindon. Hosted at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre , this one-day event explores how biobased construction – especially straw – can reshape our buildings, our materials economy, and the systems that support them. This year’s Symposium also marks ten years of Straw Building UK – a decade of growing momentum, shared knowledge, and collective action. We will also host the official launch of The English Edition of French Professional Standards for Building with Straw – a milestone for training, technical clarity, and international collaboration. The day includes: Provocations and insights from across the sector Hands-on demonstrations and exhibitions Conversations on policy, craft, education and insurance New thinking on cities, carbon, culture and care Plenty of time to meet others shaping this field Whether you’re in design, development, construction, community organising, policy, education or housing, you’ll find something here to provoke and inspire. This is an invitation to shape what comes next – using materials rooted in place, practice and planetary limits. A special thanks to our Platinum Sponsors - Ecococon and Ecological Building Systems - now working together as one team across the UK and Ireland. Their support helps make this event possible. A full and diverse programme will be shared soon. If you're curious, committed or just want to be in the room, we encourage you to book early - space is limited and Early Bird tickets won’t last. Places are limited. Early booking is strongly advised. Information Source: Straw Building UK | eventbrite
