Join Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Eric Michaelsen, as he discusses the many different medicinal uses of mugwort in oriental medicine and how to use mugwort for moxibustion. Eric Michaelsen is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine practicing in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Originally from Lansing, Michigan, he graduated from Kalamazoo College with dual degrees in English and Japanese before accepting a post with Teach For America in New Orleans. He graduated with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, NM in 2016. Eric’s style of acupuncture is based in Japanese Meridian Therapy and incorporates sotai and Kampo herbal diagnosis. His teachers include T. Koei Kuwahara-Sensei and he has studied in the style of Shudo-Sensei as well. He occasionally provides translations and, more rarely, articles for the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine. In his free time, Eric is a devoted bicyclist, hiker, coffee drinker, hi-fi enthusiast, and cinephile and can usually be found trying to shoehorn as many of those into one day as possible with his daughter, Frances. This talk will now include a lavender distillation demonstration. All ticket holders are welcome to join us at 12pm at the Ag-Center to learn how to distill lavender in an alembic copper still. At 12pm Chloe Kerr will demonstrate how to load and set up the still. When ticket holders return at 5:30pm for the talk, the distillaiton process will be under way. Join Maxfied Bervig, Los Poblanos lavender farmer, for a talk all about growing lavender in New Mexico. Max will discuss soil composition, water useage, pruning and harvesting, propogation, and distillation of lavender. Maxfield Bervig is the Garden & Landscape Manager at Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm. He has been farming lavender at Los Poblanos for the last 10 years, specializing in the growth, distillation, and propogation of Grosso lavender. Join us for a talk led by, Yessica Sierra-Zamora, a fourth-generation curandera, Reiki master instructor, and an intuitive clairaudient who has been practicing curanderismo for over twenty-five years. In 2012, she opened her practice, Lady Lotus Healing, which is located in Corrales, NM. Sierra-Zamora will be speaking about different types of herbs and how they have traditionally been used both medicinally and spiritually in curanderismo healing tradition. Ever wanted to learn how to knit? Now is yout chance! Marsha Julian will be teaching workshop participants how to knit their own wool trivet/potholder using spun Churro roving. Participants will be knitting with large needles, size 11-15. The project will be finished by wet felting to create a sturdy trivet/potholder. Roving and needles are provided in this class with instructions on wet felting. All participants will leave with their very own trivet/potholder.
