Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts | Surrey
Celebration
The enchanting and spiritual welcome of the Indian monsoon dates back thousands of years. Every year, heavy monsoon rains sweep across the country, but amid the devastation and destruction, the monsoon season is also filled with celebrations, including dance, music, theatre, film and festivals.
South Asians are the largest visible minority group in Canada, but a quick glance at Vancouver’s performing arts community reveals that there are very few South Asian professionals currently working in the industry. So in August 2016, Gurpreet Sian and Rohit Chokhani came together to create and co-produce the inaugural Monsoon Performing Arts Festival, a stable and professional platform where South Asian artists are able to experiment and showcase their creative work while being given the opportunity to learn from some of the most accomplished artists in the industry. Since its inaugural edition in 2016, the Monsoon Festival has been hosted by the founding organization, the South Asian Arts Association.
