The Takata Archives with Joyce Winough | Old School Yoga Studio
Arts
We are honoured to welcome
Joyce Winough
, Reiki Master and long-time companion and wife of the late of the late Phyllis Lei Furumoto, to present an intimate and historically rich exploration of the
Hawayo Takata Archives
.
Hawayo Takata’s lifelong dedication to teaching Reiki laid the foundation for the worldwide spread of this healing practice. In 2017, a remarkable collection of her personal materials—letters, photos, recordings, and documents—was carefully sorted, scanned, and prepared for donation to the University of California, Santa Barbara. Joyce was at the heart of this archival project.
In this special presentation, Joyce will share a thoughtfully curated slideshow of 125 archival images—each accompanied by personal stories that offer insight into Mrs. Takata’s life, teachings, and the early days of Reiki practice in the West. The presentation also features rare voice recordings of Takata Sensei, originally captured on cassette by Helen Haberly and lovingly remastered for future generations. In one, Takata shares her thoughts on the powerful physical responses that can occur during a Reiki treatment.
This event is more than a history lesson—it’s a heartfelt weaving of memory, lineage, and personal experience. Joyce brings not only the physical archives but also the living energy of connection to a Reiki family whose impact continues to ripple across the globe.

How do I get to the Old School Yoga Studio from Stratford Upon Avon?
The postcode for the yoga studio is CV37 8NG.
If you know the shop and cafe in Preston on Stour then the studio is next door to that ...heading out of Stratford on the Shipston Road it is the turning on the right about halfway between Stratford and Alderminster by the Alscot Estate. You should see the long brick wall of the Alscot Estate and the turning to Preston is at the end of the brick wall. When you turn into Preston Lane, follow the road for a short way and then over the little bridge and round the bend towards the right. The first thing you will see on the right is the village hall. There is a cut out for village hall parking there and the driveway to the studio is next to the cut out (there is a small wooden sign at the entrance to the driveway)...it is quite a narrow drive but there is parking at the rear and the entrance to the yoga studio where we will be is at the rear. Some people also park on the road as it is not a main road that is a cut through to anywhere so this is fine.
**Important : Please do not use the Village Hall car parking area as this is strictly for village hall events and you are likely to get blocked in

The photo below shows the entrance to the narrow drive that leads to the studio.
Is there parking at the studio?
There is a free car park at the rear of the studio and the entrance to the yoga studio where we will be is also at the rear. It is quite a narrow driveway leading to the carpark so pull out wide before turning in! Some people also park on the road as it is not a main road that is a cut through to anywhere so this is fine.
**Important : Please do not use the Village Hall car parking area as this is strictly for village hall events and you are likely to get blocked in

What time does it start?
