Join the Belfast Photo Festival team for an introduction to ‘Camera Obsolete?’ as part of the Belfast Learning Festival. Meet the Belfast Photo Festival team behind ‘Camera Obsolete?’ for an in-depth introduction to the project. The team will guide visitors through the exhibition and explain how the work developed, from concept to public programme. Attendees will also have the chance to take part in a taster session of the DESTROY, DISMANTLE or REMAKE activities. 'Camera Obsolete?' is a participatory installation and major public exhibition confronting the collapse of photography’s mechanical era. Conceived and produced by Belfast Photo Festival, audiences are invited to destroy, dismantle, repair or recast obsolete cameras into new sculptural forms. Part participation, part spectacle and part material transformation, the exhibition forces questions of authorship, truth and the erosion of photography as a physical, tangible medium. Participants can wield hammers in dedicated rage rooms or use precise tools to prise apart equipment in bespoke disassembly areas. Bring your own camera or choose one of the hundreds available on display. Everyone is invited to gather, sort and rework the mechanical fragments into new sculptural forms. The resulting objects will remain on display throughout the exhibition and will ultimately inform a permanent public sculpture for Belfast Botanic Gardens.  'Camera Obsolete?' reframes photography’s transition not as quiet decline, but as a charged, creative and public act. It marks a moment in the medium’s evolution and mechanical history, inviting audiences to engage directly with what is being remade and reimagined. As image-making enters an algorithmic and AI-driven age, choose to question, confront, create or simply watch. Please note that closed-toe shoes are required to take part in the activities. One day workshop with WAVE Trauma Centre Working closely with others' pain and trauma can take a silent toll. This workshop will explore how carers can better understand trauma;- including how traumatic experiences can affect emotions, behaviour, relationships, and development. Participants will explore the impact of trauma on both those they support and themselves, recognising signs of stress, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. A 2 day masterclass for professional conservators offering a comprehensive understanding of tear repair techniques for canvas and textiles This advanced level masterclass is designed to offer professional conservators a practical understanding of tear mending techniques for canvas and textiles, with a comprehensive focus on: Bonding: adhesive selection Bridges: thread & adhesive selection Patches: textile & adhesive selection Inserts: preparation, textile & adhesive selection Ethics and Preservation: Balancing restoration aesthetics with long term material stability. Participants will gain both theoretical understanding and practical experience, enabling them to approach tear repair with confidence and precision. The workshop provides an opportunity to develop specialized skills, engage in hands-on problem-solving, and explore best practices in the conservation of delicate textiles and canvas supports, strengthening professional expertise and critical decision-making.
