Abstract
We’re excited to welcome Marcia Lim as our featured Woman in CGS speaker. Marcia is a Principal Environmental Engineer and Team Lead at WSP Canada Inc., with over two decades of experience in environmental site assessments, remediation, consulting, and operations management. She currently serves as Chair of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) York Chapter, where she brings her expertise in strategic planning, risk and financial management, and public engagement.
A passionate advocate for mentorship and inclusion, Marcia has played a key role in supporting engineering interns in their licensing journey and advancing Engineers Canada’s 30 by 30 initiative—a national effort to increase the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are female-identifying to 30% by 2030.
In her talk, Marcia will share insights from her leadership within PEO and the broader engineering community, reflecting on how mentorship, sponsorship, and diverse teams lead to stronger outcomes, greater innovation, and a deeper sense of belonging in the profession.

Unsaturated Slope Stability in Mining
Abstract  
Saturated soil mechanics is commonly utilized by the geotechnical engineering community in practice. The assumption is that saturated soil conditions represent a conservative design case. Therefore, a large rainfall event that could reduce suction levels to zero is already (theoretically) considered in the analysis. Numerical analysis supporting such designs also typically ignores soil suctions. The focus then turns to a total or effective stress analysis which, at best, only considers the effect of positive pore-water pressures.
This approach raises a number of questions such as “What if the saturated approach is not realistic?”, or “When can a saturated approach not represent a conservative approach?”.
This presentation will examine the base theory in the context of a number of real-world scenarios to demonstrate the usefulness of unsaturated soil mechanics in practical geotechnical engineering practice. A particular area of focus will be on mining problems for which unsaturated soil mechanics becomes relevant to the estimation of design performance. Easy ways of applying unsaturated soil mechanics in numerical modeling practices will also be examined.
About the Speaker 
Murray Fredlund was the founder of SoilVision Systems Ltd., which was acquired by Bentley Systems Inc. in 2018. He has spent much of his time over the past 24 years guiding the development of geotechnical software development. His work has particularly been focused on pioneering the use of 3D slope stability and large-strain consolidation analysis tools in the industry. Fredlund has been involved in many services projects involving open pit stability, heap leach flow/stability, waste rock stability, tailings stability, foundation analysis, and mine tailings consolidation. His work has included forensic modeling of the Mt. Polley, Cadia, and Feijao tailings dam failures. He continues to work for Bentley in the Industry Solutions Group which is tasked with integrating software workflows into digital twins.
