A quiet town and locality in the Shire of Bulloo, Queensland, Australia, Thargomindah is located along the Adventure Way. The town lies on the banks of the Bulloo River, approximately 200 kilometres west of Cunnamulla and 1100 kilometres west of Brisbane.
The leading road is sealed to Thargomindah with a 45-kilometre stretch dedicated to being sealed to the iconic historic Burkes & Will “Dig Tree” site on Cooper Creek at Nappa Merrie Station. A perfect touring route for backpackers and adventure seekers, the trajectory via the famous Strzelecki Track and the Flinders Ranges offer exciting avenues to explore.
Tourists can follow this Highway through the Bulloo Shire and explore the deserts, gibber and flood plains discovering the natural, scenic and pristine beauty and the unique qualities of the Outback in far South Western Queensland.
Tip: April to October is the best time to visit Thargomindah to avoid the summer heat. The place offers all services to travellers.
Getting to Thargomindah
There is no direct connection from Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Thargomindah. There is no direct flight from Brisbane via Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Thargomindah. You will have to check flights to Charleville (CTL) or Blackall (BKQ) and take a bus to Cunnamulla (CMA) and then hire a car to drive down to Thargomindah (XTG).
Qantas Airways and Regional Express (REX) Airlines fly from Brisbane (BNE) to Charleville (CTL) or Blackall (BKQ).
There are only two flight operators that ply this route. To find a cheap flights to Charleville or Blackall from Brisbane, keep looking out for deals from Qantas Airways or REX Airlines.
Tip: The flight from Brisbane to Charleville or Blackall will take up to 2-3 hours.
Take in the sights of the city
Located about 126 metres above sea level, Thargomindah gets its name from the Aboriginal word “echidna” which means “cloud of dust”. Situated on the banks of the River, the town is a great place to stroll around the banks starting from Cobb & Co crossing to the caravan park. You can enjoy the soothing sites of dense foliage offering a fresh, salubrious climate.
The town has several historic buildings to visit. Visit the Leahy House built in 1885 and made of mud brick. The Post Office located on 17a Gilbour Street was opened in 1870 and was still standing. The artesian bore of the town that lies 2 km out of town on the Noccundra road was drilled in 1891 to a depth of 795 metres. The water came up to the surface, and once it started delivering hot clean water, the pressure from the water was used to generate electricity and it was the Australia’s first hydro-electricity scheme.
Visit the Noccundra hotel about 142 km west of Thargomindah which has been listed by the National Trust. You could also get to see the stone ruins of the Noccundra Store established in 1891. The Dig Tree is another famous site where William Brahe, left in Command to explorers Burke and Wills, buried supplies and carved the word “Dig”. The irony is that Brahe left seven hours before the explorers came back from the exhausting expedition to the spot.
Tip: You can become an explorer to enjoy the natural water systems by following the footsteps of Cobb and Co in your canoe, fishing boat and spot the rare grey grass wren in the lignum or Bourke’s parrot along the Bulloo River.

Although tiny and quiet, Thargomindah offers most services- motels, caravan and hotel accommodation and range of eating options. You could also opt to stay at Charleville or Blackall and then drive down to Thargomindah if you are looking for luxury hotels and resorts.
