Who wants to go to Airolo? Usually travellers that use the Gotthard-tunnel in a northerly direction. We decided to dodge the traffic jam and stay the night as near to the tunnel entrance as possible. Hotel Forno is a nice enough place. Expect no greatness. Rooms are comfortable (beware: low ceilings!), although they can be a bit noisy as the hotel is located on the main road. No airconditioning means you have to open a window sooner or later and that means a lot of traffic noise. The restaurant serves very decent food indeed. For those that want to stay the night and travel on through the tunnel the next morning: make sure you’re on time! (Certainly before 9AM and preferably earlier) During peak-season the entrance to the motorway at Airolo in Northerly direction is blocked during the day, to prevent cut-through traffic. If that happens you have to backtrack on the old road to entrance nr 42 at Quinto and join the motorway queue all over again! When you arrive in the afternoon and there are long queues for the Gotthard, don’t join them until you reach exit 41 at Airolo, but leave the motorway at the earlier exit at Quinto and make your way to Airolo using the local road. Disliked · Prices are really staggering and don’t befit the hotel. Breakfast is a very basic thing indeed. There is no garden or patio at the back of the hotel. The only option to sit outside are a few tables almost directly at the roadside. Not very pleasant. The enormous terrace over the dining room unfortunately remains empty and unused. It could make for a better proposition to sit outside on a nice day than those few tables on the pavement.
