This is a wonderful building, full of character, the gardens are beautiful and well cared-for. The downstairs areas are comfortable with spotless windows, the food is a strength here, with one of the best breakfasts of my fortnight's touring holiday, and a good evening meal. Staff at reception and serving breakfast were charming and efficient, although others seemed to be less confident. The room was comfortable, with a nice view. However, there were a few peculiarities which let things down a bit. The television had a very patchy reception, and only one of the taps on the handbasin functioned. Neither of the bathtaps worked, and the shower was rather noisy. This was such a shame, as it did take the shine off things a little. Overall though, I enjoyed the stay, and would certainly be happy to return.

Booked a room in September paying extra for the free cancellation. Unfortunately due to illness I had to cancel which I did within the allocated time. I was still charged the cost and it has taken me 3 days to sort it out. The hotel still maintains the cancellation was after the date so no money from them, thankfully the booking agent has sorted it out and a partial payment has been arranged.

An unsatisfactory overnight stay! We were allocated Room 3 with a cracked window pane, badly defaced furniture and the TV had no signal. In addition, there was an extremely foul stench from the en suite bathroom drainage. In recognition of the foul odour we were offered a move to Room 9 which we refused on the basis that this room appeared to have been uncleaned following the previous guest's departure. At our request a staff member put bleach/disinfectant into our Room 3 bathroom drainage before we left for an evening function. The manageress was apparently on holiday, however, an email sent to her (receipt of which acknowledged by a staff member) requesting that in view of our dissatisfaction she consider granting compensation in the form of at least a partial refund has failed to evoke a response despite a reminder.

Sadly a bad experience tonight. Went for a birthday meal. One of us ordered steak, it was thin, fatty and grisly. At 8pm we were half way through a bottle of wine and were asked if we wanted dessert. We said we’d like to finish our wine and then have dessert but apparently the chef was waiting to go home!!! So were being rushed into ordering. Given that it’s a hotel why is the chef going home at 8pm??! We sat in the conservatory as the main bar area is dark and dingy with tv on. This place could be so much nicer if a lot of money was invested into it. Sadly in decline.

We did not stay in the hotel so can’t comment on the accommodation. We were there for our son and daughter in law’s wedding. The food was delicious and very well prepared, we had a family meal and then a buffet later everyone commented on how good the buffet was. The staff are excellent and extremely helpful . We came up for breakfast in the morning and it was lovely and our waitress was very friendly and efficient.

For a hotel which aims to provide a 5* experience (as per their website), they need to drastically improve their aim! Recently stayed for one night in what was described as a "Deluxe double" room. We arrived around 4.30, and were booked in efficiently, then personally taken to our room by the duty manager Leane. We unpacked our bag, quickly got changed and left to have an evening in Stirling. On our return and having more time to look closely at the room, we discovered no soap in either of the soap dispensers, a cracked window, window frames with flaking paint and black mould, windows were dirty. There was black mould on the back of all curtains. The theme continued in the bathroom. One window was screwed shut because the catch was missing, the roller blind didn't work, the toilet flush was loose and the cistern cracked. The wash basin was cracked, the chain on the plug was broken off. The plastic bath panel was cracked on the edge. There was black mould on the baseboard of the shower. Back in the bedroom, the old fashioned wooden floor standing clothes hanger was unusable as the top was broken, there was a sizeable chunk of wood missing on the bedframe, and when we turned on the centre light the amount of dust and cobwebs on the fitting was shocking. One of the bulbs wasn't working. The duty manager Leane was called, and she agreed that the room fell well below the standard, but the hotel was full so she couldn't move us. She said the owner was in the hotel and she would get him to come and see the room....he didn't bother. It was too late to start looking for another hotel, so we had to stay the night. The next morning, the new duty manager (Maggie) advised us the bill had been reduced from £99 to £49. After the delicious breakfast, we advised her we were not willing to pay for the room, but would pay £25 for the breakfast. She rang the owner who just said "OK, that's fine" This hotel needs a disgusting amount of money spent on it to bring it up to an acceptable standard, and its clear the current owner has no interest in doing it. I feel for his staff, who are doing a great job and deserve a medal in my opinion......he's lucky to have them.

The Dunmar Hotel is a charming hotel with plenty of character. If you are looking for a weekend away from the "multi chain" hotel groups where you're basically just a "number" then go to the Dunmar. Yes there are areas which are needing some attention, but this is part of the charm of a beautiful old building. My wife and I stayed two nights and we had two incredible peaceful nights sleep. The room was spotless, yes there were marks on walls etc but you'll find that in any hotel. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty, we didn't have evening meals as we were visiting friends, but on both evening's the restaurant/ bar area looked very busy. The staff were lovely and helpful and we will definitely make a return visit the next time we're in the area. These beautiful "old hotels" were part of the fabric of generations and are still worth a visit.

To be quite honest, this house needs a full refurbishment . It's dated the room I stayed in Room 1. The bathroom ceiling is ready to fall down, the shower leaks the floor is lifting, the sink has a large crack in the bowl, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling Bedroom large cracks on the walls window glass broken you can not even turn in the bed it sweaks , and the lock on door does not snib, the mattress is like a stone floor really hard Dinning room is also dated the chandler's above the tables were you eat are full of dust and cobwebs, the whole house is just very dark . The girl on reception/bar was very pleased . Don't think I will be staying here again
