My two university age children and I recently spent two wonderful nights at The River House in Andermatt. The area is magical - the geographic heart of the Alps and Switzerland, and it truly feels it. We hiked both days that we were in Andermatt, and the vistas after an hour of climbing are breathtaking. The hotel itself is a perfect combination of classic mountain lodging (great beds, thick comforters) and modern chic. Every member of the staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful - and if you are lucky, you will bump into the cook's huge, beautiful and incredibly sweet and gentle dog during your visit. We ate dinner in the restaurant / bar each night. The vibe was modern mountain, and the food was excellent, with good options for my vegetarian daughter. Two musts if you stay at The River House. First, leave your window open at night so the adjacent river can lull you to sleep. Second, do the white knuckle drive over the Furka Pass (where, for Bond fans, Goldfinger and 007 dueled in their Aston Martins).
