We live locally. This was an 80th birthday treat. A local hotel with cooked breakfast. See website screenshot attached. What we got as breakfast was a box as pictured delivered to our room in the evening. No explanation. No refund offered so we had paid for a delicious sounding meal but got a packed lunch in a cardboard box.

We complained - but, as previous reviewers stated - she has an answer for everything. Our stay was a disaster. It was meant to be a treat for an 80 yr olds birthday. The situation was SO bad, we went to The Stag, Beckland Lodge, for a cooked breakfast as a breakfast in a box was not what we paid for. We complained but got no response at all. Choose what you want but there are better places locally.

We used this venue for a wake. All the staff were excellent, always helpful and going that extra mile. The food on the buffet was good. The hot food was hot and there was plenty of food to go around. We were a small group of 24 and we were given the dinning room, which also had a bar for those that required it, for our use. I am very happy to give this venue a five star rating. Thank you

Some reasons explain why there will always be vacancies at Sherbourne House, even when you book late. Right upon arrival, you are required to pay for the full stay, on a SumUp terminal (first clue). The place is not busy (see below) yet you will be given the worst rooms, those on the road. Plan sleeping pills. The establishment is clearly designated as a “hotel”, with tariffs not cheap at all, but the rooms will not be made up during the day. Do not try to argue with the proprietor; obviously this person is well trained to have an answer to everything. On a July night, we were the only customers, that was rather gloomy. The place might have had some standing in the past but is now in decline.

Our stay was pleasant and the hotel staff were attentive and friendly. Breakfast was nice. The continental breakfast selection and presentation was good. Our overall experience was soured by the indifferent attitude of the manager to a request for assistance when we left an expensive phone charger behind. First, we emailed the hotel and got no reply. We telephoned and were told it had been found. After several more phone calls over almost three weeks, we were told it had been posted. An old and shabby charger was received, not the one left behind; not even the same type of charger. Exasperated, we called and emailed the hotel again. The manager gave this excuse: she said the charger was not found when we left, contradicting what was said shortly after our departure, and that a subsequent guest must have taken our charger, replacing it with their own. Our charger was still in the room then? This explanation stretches credulity. We’ve returned the charger sent to us. Sad that the efforts of the staff were marred by the manager’s dismissive attitude.

The hotel is situated in a great position close to (but not too close!) the town centre. As we turned into the drive we found ample parking, and as we approached the front door, the door was opened for us, which was very welcome as it was pouring with rain. Check-in was friendly, quick and efficient and we were taken up to our room. Room 16 is a lovely large room with dual aspect, and was light and bright, and spotlessly clean. The large ensuite had a bath and separate shower and again was spotlessly clean. Despite the house being very old the room was modern and tastefully decorated and even had USB ports by the bed. We were aware in advance that dinner wasn't available on site so we had already made other plans, and as there are many different options for eating in the town within walking distance, it was easy to find something we liked. We had an excellent night's sleep on a very comfortable super king bed - it was totally quiet, we didn't hear a sound, which was a surprise given that our first night was a Saturday so we were expecting some noise. On Sunday morning we went to breakfast, and a member of staff was there to show us to the breakfast room. Breakfast was excellent - I have gluten and dairy allergies, and the staff had already put soya milk on the table for my coffee. We had very nice cooked breakfasts and it was obvious that nothing was too much trouble. All the staff we met throughout our stay were friendly, attentive, and helpful and we were thoroughly impressed with every one of them. Before checking out we came to the conclusion that the hotel rooms could be underpriced. It was certainly cheaper than other hotels I looked at locally before I booked, and has a nicer, more homely atmosphere than most of the hotel chains (as you'd expect for a family-run hotel) which I was happy to pay a little more for. I would certainly have expected to pay more for a room as nice as the one we had, which was justifiably advertised as a junior suite. Pauline and her small team should be congratulated on their professionalism, and the amount of effort they put in to ensuring their guests get the best possible service. Thank you so much, Pauline, I hope we can stay at Sherbourne again soon.

Visited with some family over the weekend for a birthday celebration and despite enjoying my time with my family I was completely disappointed with everything this place has to offer, especially the awful service!! -When attempting to liaise with the staff prior to arrival they were impossible to get hold of. - Staff openly admitted to buying bottled beer from sainsburys local just down the road, what sort of function doesn’t have a single draught beer and charges extortionate inflated prices! - After being absolutely ripped off and charged £25 per person for a buffet which was originally advertised as a different price on their brochure, they presented us with a minimal spread which was cleared away by the staff within the hour with no notice or any offer of the hosts taking their left over food home with them! -Staff were not welcoming of families with children, in fact they were complaining about children having fun and doing children things! - We were treated like children ourselves, spied on by, and to top it all off, completely patronised and condescended by the owner who marched myself back to my room, accused me of breaking a clearly worn curtain and only showed me to tell me to be more ‘ respectful ‘ before making rude remarks and slamming the door behind me as I walked out. A total rip off in every sense, topped off by an incredibly rude and unacceptable level of service! Spend your money elsewhere and save yourself the hassle!
