I flew Cathay to Bangkok - a great start to my trip (but really, my plane caught fire on the way back and I wasted 8 hours back in London). Because of this I missed the hotel I originally booked. After arriving, I found out that there was a conference going on here (November 17th, you know, 25th), and all the hotels were full. After an hour of hopeless searching, I returned to the hotel and tried a government travel agency. He arranged for us to stay at the travelers hotel (or travelers, depending on what you read). When you arrive at the hotel, you will feel that you have arrived in a rather dirty area. The agent asked me to pay 1,250 baht, but in fact if I booked online, the price should be nearly 1,100. However, it is quite close to a subway station, but it is still quite a distance away (if you transfer, it takes about half an hour to transfer by subway or skytrain). My first impressions of the room: 1) There was a lot of water in the toilet, and the toilet wouldn't flush. 2) There are many stains and burn marks on the carpet. 3) The window lock is broken and can only be closed reluctantly - the noise is very loud and the traffic is constant. 4) The door next door is not locked. 5) The safe was placed on a cupboard and glued to the wood. 6) There was a food stain on the bed sheet, but it looked clean. I can't think of anything more. Sound insulation is poor - mainly due to the single layer of glass. The refrigerator would make strange noises at night and the air conditioner would not quiet down. The elevator smells really bad - I even named the elevator on the right "the smelly elevator" and I would rather climb the stairs than take this elevator. There is basically no sound insulation between rooms and floors. If you stand in the hallway, you can hear the sounds coming from the "sky bar" (a standard restaurant on the ground floor facing a seedy place with no view...). I talked to the front desk for a long time about changing rooms - the only room they had had an awful cigarette smell that was so strong that I couldn't stand it. The hotel is in serious need of decoration. And the breakfast is not enough. I can't speak highly enough of the Thai food - I'm sure it was ok (rice, prawns, cucumber slices, tea - not what I wanted). But I met Americans at the American restaurant. It includes two slices of toast, a small glass of orange juice (if you're lucky), unlimited water, a cup of coffee or tea or a drink similar to coffee, a slice of very dry and overcooked bacon, two burnt Eggs, a small slice of ham and a sliced hot dog underneath. It was a hot meal, but everything combined didn't fill a quarter of the plate. Other guests thought (and I quote) "extremely disappointing", "pathetic", "not what I expected" and "will the real food be served soon?" All in all, this is a great place to sleep. As long as you have headphones on and are still jet lagged, you probably won't care too much. The staff is friendly, but none of them speak English. I wouldn't really recommend it - if you don't want a bath, you can find much better and cheaper places (two people I met on the train found a place without a bath for just one night £4, much smaller, but much cleaner.
