Being an Art Deco aficionado and my wife being an Agatha Christie fan, we just had to go over to Burgh Island, initially just to see the island which we traversed up to the very top where you have a 360 degree view of the mainland and seascape. As we came down I spoke to a member of ground staff who was extremely helpful allowing us up to the Hotel where we were able to book a table for afternoon tea at reception. Being surrounded by so many Art Deco artefacts was a dream time for me especially on our return to the Hotel for tea two days later. All the staff were first rate being very helpful and thoroughly professional throughout especially Simon the Hotel Concierge. We hope to revisit Burgh Island Hotel again next year, but will take a room in the Hotel itself for the total experience. In case Art Deco is unknown to you, it was a movement back in the 1920/30s, where form, paintwork and style were very fluid and adventurous, Burgh Island Hotel is the most unique in Europe and the grand lady deserves her place in history as well as being in the modern world. The transportation when the tidal waters have covered the causeway is by Sea Tractor to and from Bigbury to Burgh Island and back again, in our case the water was over 5 feet deep almost covering the tyres, the main passenger deck was well above this but travelling over water at 2mph without getting your feet wet was such an experience.

Outstanding! From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, everything was perfect. The staff go out of their way to make you feel special, always introducing themselves and asking your name. They really care for you. Service, food, ambience, room, sleep quality, everything was spot on. We were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary and are so glad we chose to stay here, it was truly memorable. If you get a chance to stay here, you are very lucky and you will not be disappointed. Thank you for looking after us. We will be back one day we hope.

This hotel has been in my subconscious for decades and it was crazy exciting to finally be there! It lived up to, and surpassed, all of my expectations. I was there as a solo traveller to celebrate my 50th birthday and, it's no exaggeration to say, it felt as though every minute was perfection! I felt sooooo glamorous just being there. The only reason I gave it 4 for the location is the slightly terrifying Devon roads that make the last 15 mins of the journey a nail biter! But that's just me. I loved it at Burgh Island the hotel is fab and the staff cannot do enough for you - I really hope I get to go back some time but have spectacular memories if not. Just go. You will not regret it.

The staff, service, setting and character are beyond your normal hotel stay, and this isn't a normal hotel - its an experience. The compulsory Black Tie and cocktail/ball dress in the Grand Ballroom all add to the occasion, without the stuffiness of posh hotels. Service is 5 star and friendly. There is of course another restaurant option or the pub on the island if you don't want to dress up so it's totally up to you if you want to get into the spirit of the place. The bedrooms are all different so check out the rooms beforehand and chose what is important to you - whether you'd prefer a lounge area or a balcony or bigger bathroom or more importantly a bigger than 4ft bed. Might be worth talking to reception to ensure you get what's important for you. My husband and I struggled with our 1930's 4ft bed which was totally in keeping with the room decor but didn't really help our quality of sleep whereas other rooms have bigger beds for example. There is wifi but no TV in rooms, but a lovely coffee machine to ensure a perfect start to the mornings. It doesn't have a spa but a 1930's hotel wouldn't have either but this Art Deco masterpiece has all you need for an escape from the mainland, with an incredible setting and expanse of beach - you could just stare at the views all day long. There is a small sauna inside the hotel that you can ask them to put on for you in advance when you have had your cold water swim and there were no frowns at all when 4 of us walked back into the hotel in our dryrobes after our swim .. or when we donned all tennis gear to play on the tennis court, which by the way had the best view of any tennis court I've ever played on.

Every day is 1932 at Burgh Island. The Moment you see the island from the beach and the sea tractor chugs across the sand you are transported to a a world long gone. From the quality of the service, to the ambiance of the hotel the experience is one to remember. The staff are wonderful, warm friendly and efficient. Dinner in the Grand Ballroom is just perfect, with live music and wonderful food, and everyone dressed the part. For the full package dig out you best 1930s outfits and travel back in time.

We booked to stay here one night of our SWCP walk. It was a big treat for us. A couple of weeks before we had a call to say the room we had booked needed some work and we had been moved to the Artist’s Studio room. The was above the pub on the Island and although nice, we were disappointed not to be in the main hotel.
