Jamala Wildlife Lodge and Australian National Zoo and Aquarium You get what you pay for – Jamala Wildlife Lodge Is Like a 1st Class African Safari without having to fly to Africa. We loved every second. Jamala is within the zoo compound, and is cleverly designed to have animals close to guests. First off, the animals come first, everyone else comes second, just the way it should be. Many of the animals are rescue animals, and any interaction with humans is at the whim of the animals themselves. uShaka Lodge and Other Rooms Recently celebrating its 8th birthday, Jamala has 15 rooms located within uShaka lodge, Giraffe Treehouses and Jungle Bungalows. uShaka lodge was once the administration building of the original aquarium and zoo business, but was converted into the home of ex-developer Richard and Maureen Tindale and their family. Richard, his son, and grandson are still involved in the zoo, with Richard and his wife having moved elsewhere onsite. Our “Shark Suite” was once Richard and Maureen’s master bedroom, and is simply furnished, yet has a distinct feel of open savannah-meets-jungle village. I’d have been happy with even more “Africa” in our room. If something is worth doing, it is worth over-doing. The suite can be used as 2 individual rooms if needed, but we went as a couple and single for a 50th birthday. The birthday girl had the main room with its windows over-looking the lodge’s dining and lounge area. Better still, the suite is above the shark tank and is the room from which shark “encounters” can be had. Where else can you feed and pat sharks from a walkway on the other side of a secret door from within your suite? Other rooms are adjoin animal enclosures, including the lions. Our suite was $3,973 for the 2 night stay (much cheaper than an African safari, and more comfortable too). There is an extremely well-priced mini-bar, but our room had only 2 large skylights, with no other windows, merely a quirk of an extremely quirky experience. uShaka Lodge is stuffed full of delicious treasures, divine carvings and marvellous mementos of the owner’s 30 African trips. I suspect they may have a hoarding problem, but their problem is our gain. The main room has a large dining table, and a comfortable sitting area that sit between the Colobus Monkey enclosure, and shark tank. From this room, guests have their High Tea buffet upon arrival, and direct access to the aquarium and zoo through a discrete door at the end of the hall. Across the grassed pool terrace and down some stairs, son Ryan’s bedroom is now the Wild Encounter room. Imagine being part of a family whose back yard is a zoo. The main room is clearly decorated with love. Detail includes lamp shades made of animal horn and porcupine quills, and there are huge carved animal and human statues. You can sip tea with sharks swimming past only 30cms away, or munch a finger sandwich with a Colobus Monkey grinning at you from his perch within arm’s reach. Every single detail

Jamala is an absolute must have experience. We stayed two nights in the Capuchin room, they were very active and a joy to watch. First day was arriving to an amazing afternoon tea followed by a afternoon tour. We got to pat and feed a range of animals, including a rhino! Then dinner was a cool three courses of amazing food, they catered well for my dietary requirements. The 2nd day involved breakfast followed by a morning tour, This was also amazing and we got many more opportunities to get up close and personal with a range of animals. My personal highlight was going behind the scenes of the tiger enclosure and feeding them. A wonderful lunch was served out on the deck and then we had several hours of our own free time in which we chose to enjoy the pool and continue exploring the zoo. Overall this experience has been amazing and well worth its cost. Thank you to all the staff involved for your wonderful service and knowledge. It was great to see how much positive work was being done around this zoo as a conservation.

Amazing once in a lifetime experience. Rooms were amazing, food was delicious and the staff were absolutely lovely and very accommodating. Wheelchair accessible throughout including animal encounters and zoo tours. Staff were thoughtful and very inclusive which made the experience fun and stress free from start to finish. Worth every cent and we would go back again tomorrow. Thank you Jamala 😊 Just couple of notes regarding accessibility: Corridors to Meerkat suite are slightly narrow but still maneuverable and no hoist on premises but staff are very accommodating with bringing own hoist. Able to bring an ambulance patient transport vehicle to the reception door with room to unload a wheelchair and stretcher. Shower chair was provided by staff and Meerkat Suite, Meerkat room and Capuchan room, and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible. Sofa beds available in each room of Meerkat suite for support workers. King bed in Meerkat suite is high for a smaller hoist but raised off the floor allowing for hoist to go under bed for use.

This lodge deserves more than a 5 star rating. From the minute we arrived we were extremely well looked after. Superb afternoon tea on arrival, informative tour around the Zoo then off to our amazing accomodation followed by a brilliant dinner and breakfast.

Booked the grand shark suite to celebrate my son becoming a teenager. The suite itself was spacious and very comfortable. We were a little disappointed that there was no aquarium within the room as that is what we had envisaged. It’s a little bit of a missed opportunity as it would be possible considering the proximity to the aquarium. We were however very happy with our shark feeding experience with the leopard sharks. We loved having the time to roam around the zoo and then enjoyed the pre-dinner experience with the beautiful Jake and Mischka who chose to come and say hi. The dinner was superb with each dish simply outstanding. We were also really grateful to the legend John who took all of the kids on a night trip around the zoo while my husband and I enjoyed our dinner. This is a lovely gesture at Jamala and one we greatly enjoyed. Our sleep was comfortable and I even heard the lions roaring about 3am! Unbelievable! The next day we had a guided walk of the zoo and a private hyena feeding experience, another first for us which we thoroughly enjoyed! All of the staff at Jamala seem to truly love their jobs. They speak to the animals so gently by name and it really demonstrates to guests that the animals have a great life there. I was slightly disappointed they didn’t do something for my son’s birthday. Even a little handwritten note in the room would have been a nice touch. I heard another guest who was celebrating her birthday say she’d received a plush animal on her bed. We received nothing like that and barely a happy birthday for my son. A small act would have gone a long way especially as it seemed to happen for other guests and we were asked no less than three times prior to check-in if it was a special occasion. Either way it was an enjoyable overnight experience and we would recommend it to our friends.

Stayed one night at the giraffe treehouses and feed the giraffes. The room was amazing and the dinner with the visiting white lions was excellent. The wine selection was top shelf. Loved visiting the zoo. The animals are well kept and the grounds are great. I would definitely recommend visiting and look forward to visiting again this time for two nights
