This iconic South African Hotel certainly lives up to its name and five star reputation and is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Group, whose head office is in London. My wife and I stayed for a week in March 2024. The service offered is outstanding and every member of staff is extremely well-trained, to give guests a wonderful feeling of care and friendliness, but without being familiar. Breakfast on the terrace, overlooking the ocean, was a delight, with a large choice of hot dishes as well as a cold buffet, including oysters and mimosas, and the most wonderful seed bread, made to the recipe of the hotel group’s Founder and President, Bea Tollman. This is not to be missed! In the evening the terrace of the restaurant, and the Leopard Bar above, provide an exceptional atmosphere and vantage point from which to watch the sun go down with an evening drink, before a delicious dinner - and the fillet steak in the Azure Restaurant was the best that we could remember tasting for years. Without fail, the staff were friendly and obliging. A major advantage which we discovered was the Hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus service for guests, to and from Camps Bay and the bustling Waterfront in Cape Town. This made exploratory expeditions really stress free. Our stay coincided with the internationally famous Cape Town Cycle Tour Race, and, with the hotel being on the race route, (and access by car therefore being unavailable at all on that day), not only did guests enjoy a grandstand view of the closing kilometres, including cheering on the Red Carnation Hotel Group’s CEO, the Hotel Manager and one of the concierges who were taking part, but in the afternoon a complimentary party was arranged for all guests who wanted to attend, in the hotel’s delightful “wedding garden” with refreshments, live music and entertainments. This was typical of the thought, ingenuity, and little touches at which the hotel seems to excel, in making one’s stay enjoyable and special. As outstanding members of staff, we particularly liked Zintle in Guest Relations, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Also, we would sincerely commend Angus van Arden, the Operations Manager, who was truly professional, and who ensured thoroughly that guests such as ourselves felt well looked after and individually cared about, and dealt most impressively with any little problems which might arise. All in all, we had a most rewarding and memorable stay at this hotel, and I have no hesitation in recommending it, in particular, for the outstanding quality and performance of the staff, at all levels.
