The room was freezing! The heating only came on for a couple of hours. The room was ok comfy bedding, not worth £175 though. The shower made a squealing noise and the bath tap dripped all night. Breakfast alright (beans were cold). The staff at the bar and restaurant were commendable.

Genuinely terrible restaurant. If you care about food, do not eat here. If you’re expecting Grace Dent’s experience you won’t find it. Expensive and inept. Neither kitchen nor serving staff have any idea what they’re doing. Loads of menu items missing, soggy, fatty “soufflé”, overcooked fish, undercooked sausages, flimsy bread, awful wine, dirty glasses, zero atmosphere and an owner who would do well to reflect on his brand of humour. Genuinely avoid. I never write reviews but there is such a gulf between some of the big name reviews out there (had they hired a different chef for their visits, there’s definitely no scallops or goujeres on the menu!) that I was compelled to do it.

Just back from a wonderful two days at the George and Dragon in Clifton. If you are looking for a relaxing break on the eastern edge of the Lake District then look no further! Handy for trips to Lowther Castle and for walks around Ullswater. We couldn’t fault G&D’s bedrooms, bathrooms, bar or dining room. Food was delicious (special mention for the cheese soufflé and the chocolate brownie with ice cream) and the service outstanding. Star performers were Daisy, who knows how to make a really mean flat white, and Mike, a perfect host behind the bar. If I had but one small grouse it would be that the mark up on the wines was on the high side, but then again everything is more expensive nowadays. We really enjoyed our stay.

Excellent hotel, a true gem This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The room was wonderful - comfortable and clean, with nice extra touches. The bed was so comfortable it was difficult to get up in the morning! The restaurant was wonderful - excellent food and service. Breakfast was also excellent. Will definitely book again next time we are in the area.

This was our second visit (by chance put in the same room as before) and enjoyed as much as the first. The food was very good, the scallops in particular were absolutely delicious, but did feel the evening menu fairly limited and having no eggs “for about 15 minutes” at breakfast wasn’t ideal. However it’s a lovely place to overnight for us with quality bedding, brilliant breakfast and very friendly staff. I just wish the bathroom was a bit bigger!

Great weekend break After reading a review in a paper we decided to try for ourselves. The George and Dragon staff were so welcoming and friendly easy to talk to and very helpful. Our room was clean and tidy with lovely en-suite shower room , soft towels and toiletries . Breakfast and evening meal was delicious all staff made sure our dining experience was so comfortable. Really positioned whether you are heading north or south on the M6. Room was large clean and comfortable. Good value for money with friendly staff who made us very welcome. The staff really made the stay. Dinner and breakfast were delicious, particularly breakfast. Our room had the kitchen extractor fan outside it, but it really didn’t disturb our night at all. What we did have was a very large, really comfortable bed.
