Averon Guest House

My wife (Kathleen League) and our friend (Jiang Congyang) had the privilege of spending a week at the Averon Guest House in mid-September 2023. We had a wonderful time, in every way. The room was plenty large for us, and both the best were very comfortable. I had a nice table and chair where I could work, and the bathroom was fine also. I would say the shower was a little small for me, but the fact is that I was too big for it. Water pressure and heat was excellent. Breakfast was basic but fine for all of us. And coffee/tea service in the room worked very well. The proprietor/owner, Alan Cran. and his staff were personable and attentive. The building itself is both classic (it is 260-years old) and very well-maintained, with lovely gardens out front. The neighborhood around the Averon is charming and has many good restaurants, cafes, and pubs, and a nice grocery store as well. One of the most enjoyable parts of our stay, and of the trip altogether was Alan's performance every night at 9:30 of traditional Scottish songs. Alan's voice is lovely and perfect for these songs, which he has been singing for a long time, and his classical guitar technique is very good as well. Each night he also would play one song on the Bodhran, which is an Irish frame drum, and Kathleen and I found that especially impressive, as the rhythms are complex, and to sing at the same time was brilliant. This takes place in the very pleasant front room, with a fireplace (that has always been there), and Alan presents the songs with stories and a video presentation of scenes from around Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland. It's about as nice a half-hour as one could hope for, and the songs are different every night, but concluding with Auld Lang Syne. Really a great treat. We recommend the Averon Guest House fully, and we look forward to getting back there in the not-distant future. The music there is amazing , hope to go again, The place is old but gold, everything is very clean and maintained on time , The garden is one of The oldest in edinburgh , and another thing is i meet people from everywhere arround The world , thanks Averon house

Everything was Great. We were lost in the city and the place was great. Clean showers, nice rooms. And owner plays backpipe. Breakfast was good. Close to the city. Everything in walking distance. Would stay there again if I’m back in Edinburg

The house is very nice, well located and cozy. The center is walking distance and the personal is very accommodating and nice. Truly the Scottish music show is amazing and fun. Thank you Averon House for a lovely stay :)

From the start we felt at home with ample parking for our large 8 seater Ford and no height restriction, what a relief! We checked in with ease and the process was smooth, easy instructions and lots of help with our baggage for our family of 4. The room was clean and spacious with basic coffee and tea making facilities. Bathroom was large and good for us. Breakfast was an upmarket continental breakfast with four cereal options, either a cake, pastry, minced pie or croissant (depending on the day). Juice and milk for coffee or tea on your table as well as toast and cheese on your arrival to breakfast . Staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Alan the owner played some beautiful songs about Scotland from 930pm. The location is great and about 10-15 minutes walk to Edinburgh Castle and the Christmas markets. Highly recommend this place for the price and location.

Fantastic base for exploring the city, close enough to walk to the city centre (which was a great walk for sightseeing) or you can catch the bus from the many bus stops close by. The hotel was really clean with a comfy bed and tea and coffee making facilities in the room. We found our room a little dark but made some recommendations to the owner about changing the colour to make it brighter which would make a good room great. Yes this hotel is a not as modern as others but we found it a great place at a great price very close to all the attractions. We would definitely recommend and will be back again in the future.

Had a fabulous time at Averon Guest House. I have quite a few food allergies and they literally bent over backwards to help me. I had a fantastic time, lovely comfy beds, very clean and tidy a real home from home feel. Staff were wonderful and so helpful. I loved the traditional scottish music evenings, which were fun and informative and no two nights the same. Well worth a visit, conveniently situated and close to all public transport links. A big thanks to everyone there for making my holiday one to remember.

I really enjoyed my stay in Averon Guest. A very cozy place run by its own owners and with a very attentive staff always ready to help with whatever you need. The location is perfect for visiting the center, the castle and different attractions of the city. The abundant breakfast even includes delicious homemade desserts from Mrs. Cran and you can close the night enjoying the show and the local songs performed by Mr. Cran. Highly recommended for families, couples or solo travelers. ​ ​

Rooms where old, but clean and comfortable. Owner is doing evening event with songs and information about Scotland - very nice from him. Walkable distance to city center and for other parts of city bus stops are few minutes. Totally recommend!
