Masonic Arms Gatehouse

I paid £105 for B&B on a Friday night, albeit in the 'off' season for holidaymakers to Dumfries and the hotel was quiet. The room (No.2) was completely refurbished, inc. the en-suite which had a invigorating rain-shower. The large bed for was comfortable and there were two armchair from which you could watch the TV. WiFi speed was good at around 50Mbps, some of the wall sockets also had USB sockets to recharge phones. The décor was nice with deep greens and maroon. Some quirks I noted included lack of wardrobe, instead there were hangers on metal pipes. Also, a bedside table was what you might call a washstand with ceramic bowl in the top. Clearly they don't expect business people to stay, so there's no desk in the room but neither is there a fold-out luggage rack, so cases stay on the floor. Also, I noted no biscuits were provided. The rooms have nice high ceilings and in summer, the casement windows can be opened for fresh air and there's no air con. The stair up to the rooms is quite steep but there's a secure banister. As mentioned, the rooms are over the pub and music was distinctly audible until closing time. The rooms face the street, but it's very quiet. Talking of the street, parking is available in front of the hotel but there's no secure off-street parking. Breakfast is served in the pub and was nice, I went with the Masonic Grill which is a full Scottish by another name. All in all, pretty good but I didn't think quite justified more than £100 per night.
