This establishment is situated in a pretty N Yorks village and as we were approaching we were blown away by the facade of the building lit up at night. We received a very warm welcome by Laura who was very attentive and helpful. We had a standard double as this was the only one available but we were very impressed by the decor and comfort of the bed and pillows. We overlooked the front of the property and when we drew back the curtains next morning we had a lovely view of the stream. Dinner was excellent and we were given a table in a cosy little room just off the bar area. I am a pescatarian and I was very pleased with amount of choice available to me. Our starters were beautifully presented, my husband had the devilled pigeon breast and I had the burrata with pear. Our mains were excellent too and eventually we opted for venison haunch and lentil moussaka accompanied by sides of chunky chips and sweet potato fries. Service was unhurried and all the staff were very friendly, again Laura stood out. I have never stayed in such a quiet pub overnight. You could have heard a pin drop which is quite unusual as it is in the centre of the village. Breakfast again was very very good. The usual fruit yoghurts etc plus some absolutely enormous croissants and Danish pastries etc. We both opted for cooked breakfasts and again we couldn’t fault the food. All in all it is one of the best stays we have ever had in a pub with rooms and amazing value for money. This really is a beautiful country pub with great staff and excellent food. We are so glad we have discovered it and can’t wait to go back. The staff are so friendly and make the stay a memorable one.

We stayed here for one night in the summer. This was literally the only hotel for miles around so there was not much choice we wanted to see the night sky - which was a success. Parking is on the street. Rooms are very nice and comfortable. Breakfast is quite fancy and delicious.

Cosy, attractive pub but we could hear the music in our room from the bar below. It was none stop from our arrival at 3.30 until 11.20pm. The room was average and the bathroom needed upgrading. The shower over the bath proved difficult to use and the scalding hot water and tap a hazard. Nice little box of chocolates provided. The breakfast and evening meal were very good and the serving staff pleasant. Restaurant was lovely.

We stayed here for a few days whilst visiting family Read previous review and thought hive it a try booked over the phone its set in a. Idyllic village with good connections to York and other major villages and town but you will need a car the hire car at York Station a stone tho away from trains a very reasonable . We arrive and taken to our room no7 which I'd I think prob best room and was recommended by the knowledgeable young man I spoke to when booking. The fairfax is a pub a well as a hotel and a village hub for the regular locals who take the bar area over from about 5 ish that's fine but as it got bussier with people wanting food who were staying and coming in I think it proved a distraction for the bar staff who twice got our food ood order wrong and made to feel it was our fault with no sorry maybe take chairs away in front of bar as takes up space. Staff in general very good but maybe the odd one needs to be more tolerant. It's hard to get a happy medium between local pub hotel and restaurant but only a few tweeks needed and yes I would stay there again

We visited for our anniversary and ate in the orangery area in the restaurant. Our food was absolutely beautifully cooked, and our service from the waitresses was very friendly and attentive. I had chicken stuffed with 3 smoked meats and my wife had steak which was a delight. My wife had a fairfax mess desert which was beautiful. This was the second time we had booked, last year we tried and never received a response to confirm our reservation, so we chose to eat somewhere else. So a second chance was given and it was a lovely experience, we will definitely be back

The last meal of our holiday and a real treat - fantastic Sunday lunch with the dog. Really superb food, fresh, great choice on menu and although we ate later in the afternoon the presentation was excellent - often not the case for Sunday lunch outside of the usual lunch time service. Staff al very welcoming, professional and knowledgeable about the menu. Not a vegetarian but I had the mushroom and blue cheese Wellington - amazing! We did book and had our dog and it was lovely to have a really nice table - you are usually shoved in a dark corner with the shoddy furniture when eating with your dog so that made a great change. Dog welcoming not just 'dog friendly'! It is a very 'smart' pub but used by locals as well. Would love to stay and sample more on another visit.
