The hotel itself is beautiful, in a private gated area (which seemed like a retirement village) with guards so you feel very safe walking around. The rooms were nice and we realised afterwards we were upgraded (although we weren’t told we were so couldn’t thank anyone). The food at the restaurant is hit and miss - we had a 4 course set valentines dinner which was exceptional, but on normal days, the food was less thrilling. The gym has good facilities (we used it everyday) and the masseuse was brilliant/so professional. The negative, however, is the level of service. My husband and I are in our mid 30s but look quite young, and we noticed that the other guests (all of which were significantly older) received what appeared to be better service. When we arrived, we weren't welcomed by reception staff saying "welcome to our hotel" but instead told "you need to pay R750 for your valentine's meal". This is fine, but was not asked politely. We were then shown around the hotel with another couple (which is not professional) and when we got to our room, the staff member didn't have our key. The door porter was a lady who couldn't lift our suitcases, so we had to carry them ourselves. When paying our bar/restaurant bills that we put on the room at the end, many of them were for other rooms and one had our room number and signature on it, but we weren't at the hotel at that time, so someone forged our signature. One night at 11pm, a staff member knocked on our door to ask if he served us a pina colada earlier that day (again, while we were out of the hotel) and even though we said no politely, he still tried to add this to our room - knocking on a guest's door at 11pm is not acceptable. The website says that the wine cellar is open for guests to have a drink in, but when we asked to go down, the female manager quite rudely said it was for private functions only (despite it having been empty for all 4 nights of our stay...). A much more polite waiter offered to take us down to have a look at it, and explained that they are short of staff to serve drinks there at the moment, which was a much more acceptable and understandable response. The massage was amazing, and a couple of waiters were very good, but all in all, the staff are in desperate need of better training, which is a shame because the hotel in itself is beautiful and could be exceptional (particularly because the service everywhere else in south Africa is so outstanding – we stayed in 5 different places!
