Hakodate 5-Star Hotel Guide

An important port city in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, Hakodate is located in the Hakodate Bay in the southern part of the Tokushima Peninsula, facing the Tsugaru Strait. By heading across the Seikan Tunnel to the south, Aomori Prefecture on Honshu Island can be reached. It is for this reason that Hakodate is known as the southern gate of Hokkaido. The port in Hakodate opened in 1854 to the outside world, making it the first in Japan that was open to foreign trade. Like Yokohama and Nagasaki, Hakodate is a historic port trading city with a population of approximately 280,000. It is the third largest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo (population: 1.92 million) and Asahikawa (population: 350,000).

Its urban area of the city extends downwards from Hakodate Hill. The nostalgic architectural complex in Motomachi, Onuma Park, and Yugawara Onsen are all places of interest in the city. Also located in Hakodate is Matsumae Castle, which comes alive when the cherry blossoms bloom in the spring. There is a lively morning market in the bay area near the train station worth checking out as well. There are more than 360 shops and the seafood that is for sale is always fresh.

Five minutes from the station, a large boat can be seen on the shore, which used to be the ship that shuttled passengers between Aomori on Honshu and Hokkaido. There is also a restaurant and cafe on the bow, where you can relax and take in the harbor view. The old town area has many old buildings, including the state-owned cultural relics of Kyu Hakodate-ku Kokaido, the original British Consulate with a European style tearoom, the Hakodate Oriental Orthodox Communion Church and the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. These attractions show a unique combination of Japanese and Western cultures. In addition, there is a large shopping mall converted from an old red brick warehouse complex which houses restaurants such as Pastry Snaffle's and Hakodate Beer Hall.

The average annual temperature in Hakodate is 10 degrees Celsius, and the temperature in January and February is approximately -2 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius. The first winter snowfall generally occurs in November, and the snowfall period ends in March of the following year. In July and August, the average temperature is below 25 degrees Celsius and the humidity is low. Even in the summer, the weather is very comfortable.
