The location is on the Reeperbahn which is very convenient. It is in walking distance to the subways and there are plenty of things to see and do in the area. The room we were in had a window facing a ***** club and there is absolutely no sound proofing. Though they do provide earplugs, it does very little to relive you of the deep base shaking your bed. We had noisy neighbours. There was no plug in the sink so if your fiend is asleep and you try wash your face the loud drain sounds will wake them up. Overall, it was alright but I won't go here again.

Well.. Do you really feel comfortable? Yes, the building (a&o Hamburg Reeperbahn, formerly Hotel Stern, address Reeperbahn 152/154) actually has a connection to the Nazi era - it was not a direct concentration camp or large concentration camp, but it was used as a forced labour camp in 1940. The exact connection (based on historical sources): • The house was built in 1891 as a Logierhaus Concordia - a cheap lodging house for poor men (e.g. Sailors, travellers without a permanent residence). It had 235 small single rooms, shared toilets and was typical for the rough harbour and red light district of St. Pauli. • In the Nazi era (especially from the 1930s), the house was often used by the porters (caretakers) to denounce (advertise) guests. Many men (e.g. B. homosexuals, ***********, "asocials") were arrested there and imprisoned - this was unfortunately common in Hamburg's "Kiez". • From August 1940: There was a forced labour camp of Deutsche Werft AG (a large Hamburg shipyard). The company used the existing building as accommodation for forced labourers - prisoners of war (POWs), civilians deported from occupied countries and from 1944 also prisoners from concentration camps (concentration camp subcamps). The shipyard had several such camps (mainly in Finkenwerder and harbour area), and this one in the Reeperbahn was one of them. Exact numbers (how many people, conditions) are not well documented, but it was part of the huge system of forced labour in Hamburg (a total of 400,000–500,000 people affected). • A Stolperstein biography mentions e.g. B. that a French woman had to perform forced labour in 1944 as a kitchen assistant in the Reeperbahn 154 Foreign Home (during pregnancy) before she came to another camp. After the war it became a normal tourist home again, converted into an Eros Centre (a large *******) in 1964, later refugee accommodation (in the 80s very dilapidated), then from 1999 Hotel Stern and 2009 a&o. Well. We had a real good sleep anyway. The Bath Room is so warm and the elevator was real… you will see…. Danke ;)

DO NOT go to this rubbish hotel! Even if it's free, don't stay! The service and attitude are terrible. The room is smelly, dirty, and messy. It's even filthier than a beggar's house. No wonder it has such a low rating.!

I have stayed in multiple A&O hostels across the country and most of them have been nice, but this one was unfortunately the worst of all. To begin with, my friend and I arrived early in the morning and had to wait several hours before the check in. During the time that we spent in the lobby we have been approached by multiple shady looking people, I wasn’t sure if they were hostel guests or simply homeless people looking for a place to sit inside. One of them offered us *****, which was completely out of place. Since the hostel is located on Reeperbahn (area known for questionable nighttime activities) I suppose they should have more security to protect actual guests from such unwanted interactions in the lobby/outer area and not let shady people use the hostel’s facilities (like bathrooms etc) for free. When we got to the room, our first impression was that it was EXTREMELY small for an 8-person room: 3 beds were crammed up against one another (imagine a П shape), which meant one person’s head would be like 50cm away from another person’s head, and the same for one’s head and other’s feet. I understand a hostel is a shared space but this is a bit too much for lack of personal space. The room didn’t have lockers: or, in fact, any kind of box/shelf to put your stuff in. There was only a locker downstairs that costs €6 for 24 hours or the staff could take your valuables to their office for free: still, that’s very inconvenient, normally all other A&Os had either a box or at least an under-bed space that you could use and lock. The toilet in this room was also broken, the water was constantly flowing and this disrupted my sleep even further along with some unpleasant loud guests (which is not the hostel’s fault but just to mention). The room also didn’t have enough light and felt generally unpleasant. To sum it up, this was a very unpleasant stay. If you are in Hamburg, A&O Hauptbahnhof is much more pleasant.

Place is decent all round, cleanliness was fine for my room, front desk was helpful in answering any questions. Location is a little skeptical as there are many activities in Reeperbahn itself at night which might not be very good for light sleepers. For the Price to Enjoyment ratio: 4/5
