A fabulous arrival experience in Costa Rica. The welcome from the reception, the food the amenities, the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms. Excellent buffet breakfast. Highlight is the extensive gardens which is home to lots of birds, great if you are into bird photography.

We stayed twice at Bougainvillea, 3 nights at the start of our birding tour, and one night at the end. It is a great introduction to Costa Rica and birding. We really loved the garden out the back, which had plenty of new birds for us. The buffet breakfast in the morning was probably the best on our trip (the only one that had a good muesli for me!) and the restaurant catered well for gluten free and vegetarian diets, with enough variety when staying a couple of days. The sandwiches are highly recommended. The rooms are spacious. There is a security box that works, and WiFi is flawless. There is a fan in the rooms but no air conditioning, and on the hot days we were there I did find the rooms a little too hot in the evenings when trying to sleep. It does cool down to around 20 degrees overnight, but that is a little hot for me. Service from all staff was excellent. They do money exchange at reception and help organise taxis for going in to San Jose. This hotel is very popular with western birders arriving in the country and it lives up to its reputation. Highly recommended.

I needed a place to recover from long flight and jet lag and this was it. The junior suites on the top floor are spacious, with great views over the garden. The gardens are large, with plenty of wildlife. Staff are friendly and food good. The location is remarkably quiet apart from a nearby school, whose joyous sounds are in any case pleasant to hear.

We stayed at this hotel twice at the start and end of our birdwatching trip. We booked a junior suite with mountain view and yes we got this but what we had not envisaged was that as well as the distant mountains there was the car park below the window and a busy road. When we were there building work was in progress across the road with constant drilling and the road was busy thoughout the night. The room itself was spacious and OK, the bed was reasonably comfortable if a little firm for me, the room large but the furnishings very tired. The restaurant food was good but they were busy with big groups and as we had not booked a table they suggested we eat at the bar despite our room rate including dinner. We declined as we wanted dinner and they did seat us quickly. There was not free seating at the bar at that time anyway. Regarding the bar service was very slow. The bar staff spent more time on the register working out the bill than actually serving customers. The staff were nice. The best part of the hotel was undoubtedly the wonderful gardens full of birds especially early morning. We wish we could have spent more time exploring. There was a delightful small shop near the hotel entrance. For the price and stated standard of this hotel we felt it was good value.

Lovely 🥰 I arrived late having had my booking at another hostel cancelled last minute. The staff here made me feel very welcome and safe from the moment I spoke to them on the phone. The lady who greeted me at the desk allowed me to have dinner before checking in so the restaurant didn’t close. The rooms are very comfortable and the surrounding area is quiet and the gardens surrounding are beautiful. Breakfast was a buffet and equally lovely and staff very attentive and helpful. They then assisted me with organising a taxi to the airport. Honestly the other hostel did me a massive favour as I never would have found this little gem. If I’m ever lucky enough to come to Costa Rica again I know where I’ll be staying. Thank you again ☺️

Absolutely wonderful, and I do not say that often: A little inconvenient from the Int'l Airport, but worth the hassle. The facilities are luxurious, clean, and in good shape. Our room was large, with a balcony on to 10 acres of very beautiful and maintained gardens and walking paths. Great for birding with owl sightings. Good restaurant. Vary reasonable prices for the meals and room. Very good staff, with good English. A.C in rooms. Wonderful bathroom. Good Wifi, Has a small fitness room. Safe. Highly recommended.

We wre booked in here by our tour company, Geodyssey, for our first night in Costa Rica before we moved on to our final destination further South and similarly for our last night before our return flights to the UK. It proved to be quite a start to our Costa Rica wildlife adventure, with the extensive landscaped garden being absolutely stuffed with birds, butterflies and exotic flowers. Our rooms was large and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the gardens. It was spotlessly clean and the bed large and comfortable. The food in the large restaurant was good and varied but the bird life in the gardens was such that like quite a few others, we were walking in the grounds from dawn until breakfast looking at birds. If you're coming to Costa Rica to see the wildlife, this hotel is a fabulous place to start off.

What a place! The garden is amazing: we saw 2 motmots by tennis court and jays and hummingbirds. Vegetation is luxuriant and varied; so many plants and colours. We met locals who had come out for day fromSan Jose to see the garden. Inside, the hotel is also a treat with colourful art work and plants. Good to get a room facing onto garden: rooms were spacious. Menu in hotel was expensive but it is Costa Rica and near airport. We went to Sports bar up road for evening meal. Bfast excellent and staff pleasant. So many passing through it felt slightly impersonal, but if you like nature, what a place to start holiday.
