The Elks Head Inn

Booked a weekend break after bit of research via a popular booking platform. Choice made by location, photos, reviews and very good pricing. Wasn’t disappointed when arrived to a lovely welcome and even though it rained a fair bit , the beauty of the surrounds was undeniable. Our room was a good size as was the bathroom , radiator and towel rack kept them warm and the shower was powerful with great temperature settings. Bed was comfy and I personally loved the country style decor. We ate both evenings at the inn and food quality was excellent. When dry, there were peaceful and interesting walks to be had and a lovely village shop/cafe which we had a light late lunch at. Within a short drive you can be in Hexham or other smaller pretty villages. Our R&R break was made not only by the location but the friendliness and care of the owners and their family/staff. I’m sure we will take another break there in the not too distant future.

This place is a traveler's best kept secret, as is Northumberland. Nestled above the banks of the river Allen, its vista over the dramatic Pennine wilderness is sublime. A warm welcome awaits. The rooms are cottage cosy but with ample space. The menu is fresh and genuine, show casing fine local produce. Breakfast was delicious. A broad wine list and a good choice of local beers will more than suffice most tastes. Can't wait for the next wild adventure to the land in which time pauses and people go out of their way to be hospitable.

Came back to the Elks Head specifically as I wanted to visit the museums on Hadrian's Wall. It is literally half hour drive from Vindolanda. Very comfortable room with spotless hot shower. The food and selection of lager excellent and the staff are super helpful. Nice fire to sit and relax in front of and a lovely location. Thank you

Thank you to Rob, Jen and their staff for a wonderful 2 night stay at their beautiful country inn. If careers were made for people they are the best example I've seen in a long time. Food is amazing. Rooms are clean and fresh. Beautiful views and a gorgeous area to explore. The welcoming hosts are the icingon the cake. Thank you once again.

Spent a couple of nights in early November, very friendly staff, excellent food, just what we were looking for to celebrate my partner's birthday, nice log fire and lovely walking aera. Really comfortable beds, plenty of hot water 👍👍

Just back from a night away at this super little hotel in a gorgeous part of Northumberland. The setting next to the river coupled with the autumn colours is really beautiful, will definitely come back in the summer to sit in the beer garden. We had a smashing meal, great selection of draught lager and we were well looked after by Harry who kept the fire stoked up and who I shared a tale or two with about a former darts player! Our room was warm and comfortable, not ensuite but we had a very nice private bathroom just across the landing. Rob and Jen were lovely hosts, very friendly, our breakfast was great, nothing too much trouble. We will definitely come back, it's a perfect base for exploring Hadrian's Wall, and hard to believe its only 12 miles off the main Newcastle/Carlisle road, a hidden gem, thank you.

We spent a weekend at The Elks Head with our dog. The en-suite room was very clean and comfortable and the pub itself was warm and welcoming. We had expected to eat meals in the bar as we had a dog but we had to eat in a separate room just off the bar, so missed out on enjoying the log burner. However, we were extremely well looked after by the lovely staff who made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious and plentiful, we enjoyed every mouthful. A very special thank you to Yvonne who arranged to post back a drawer full of dog treats, dog brush, collars and head torches that we had left behind! Thank you for taking the trouble to call us and to send our belongings back so promptly. Top service 😊

The Elks Head is a real find. Tucked away in the stunning Northumberland countryside this cosy inn offers great food, comfortable rooms and warm friendly hospitality and dog friendly too. Great location for fantastic walks and the coast is only a short car ride away. Highly recommend

Great place to stay, staff and owner very welcoming and friendly, in a quiet country area with a river running by the garden. A good place to stayfor turing around Hadrians wall, Hexam or into north Yorkshire. The food is superb with a very good chef, who iswillingto adept meals to suit aperson taste.
