We had the most amazing stay here, from lovely accommodation to beautiful food. The staff were so lovely and accomodating. The safari drives were fabulous, our driver and guide were fantastic. Such a special place. We’ve made lifelong memories, we will definitely be back.

We stayed in the River Lodge for 4 nights and the experience was absolutely incredible. We saw so many animals (including the big 5!) and watched a herd of elephants go past the room and pool. Honest and Lucas were our Ranger and Tracker and they were absolutely amazing!!! So incredibly knowledgeable and personable, they really made our experience special!

Overall a great experience. Only negatives were a few maintenance issues in the room. Lodge was very nice and food was good, not great. I enjoyed all the drives and was able to spot the Big 5,. They do their best to make sure that you have a fabulous game viewing experience

This review is for our stay at the River Lodge, which is situated not far from the Makalali main lodge. It was our first time going on a safari and it was an absolutely incredible experience!! We stayed for 3 nights, doing 6 drives total and saw four of the big five on our very first drive! Each drive was awesome and we saw a different variety of animals each time. We stayed in one of the private suites and loved the accommodations and staff. The lodging portion of the reserve is not fenced in, so cool to see animals walking through the lodging area during the day. The staff was awesome- our safari guides Nongbu and Patrick were extremely knowledgeable and made each drive memorable for us. Chef Sarah cooked incredible meals daily, and Romi & Dorothy provided excellent service while hanging out at the lodge. Solly guided us to our room at night and is the absolute best!! Amazing experience overall. Would highly recommend to anyone considering staying with them and we can’t wait for our next safari!

Words fail to capture how incredible this experience was for us from beginning to end. What a place! I can't imagine a safari experience could better this and I have to say our driver Wendy and tracker Butter are worldclass. We saw everything and more!!! The food was sensational and the staff make you feel like royalty. I hope to come again and recommend without hesitation. People here came from Kruger and said they wish they'd just come here! Need I say more!?

Stayed here for 3 nights recently. Lovely staff, all very friendly. Rooms have concrete floors, as do most of the hotel. They may be trendy, but not customer friendly as the floor in the rooms are very cold - providing slippers would be useful. They are also a bit slippy in the bathroom if wet. Loved the enormous, comfortable bed, the huge shower - and the outdoor shower! The ranger/guide (Sharron) was extremely knowledgeable and interesting, not just about the very many animals we saw, but also the plants and trees. Overall, a great stay!

This was by far our best safari and stay in Africa. The accommodations are comfortable, roomy, and clean. Rommie made sure everything we needed was done. I have a shellfish allergy and am a vegetarian which can be difficult but not here. Food outstanding. The safari guides, Patrick and Wonder Boy found the Africa big five on the first safari including the elusive leopard. They shared so many informative and interesting facts about the animals. We visited four countries in Africa and this was the best!!! Thank you

Makalali ticked all the boxes, incredible team from waiters/waitress, helpers and chefs. Great bush experience with the family thanks to the incredible rangers Emma and Nonku.

Makalali was incredible. The staff were amazing. Our Safaris were fun, informative and everything we hoped for. The driver and tracker were the best and the food was top notch. Would go back in a second.
