I am a regular customer for 10 years or more at Cut Above, the hair dressers within the hotel, Karen (the owner) is a professional hairdresser and takes passion in her work. Well I was absolutely appalled today when I went to get my hair done, firstly to see a notice at the reception to say that there is no hot water in the hotel between 10.30pm and 6.30 am and then when I went to get my hair rinsed after my treatment there was no hot water. Karen had to boil kettles to get hot water to take the treatment of my hair, this is not acceptable in an hotel and it is not the first time this has happened, it is a numerous occurrence. It is a disgrace. Karen is losing business because of this and is certainly not attracting any potential customers.

Nice new comfortable room. Very friendly staff and a lovely Scottish breakfast. Close to all the amenities in the centre of Portree. Good value for money at the Christmas and New year holidays. Would definitely consider using the hotel again when going through Skye.

The Royal hotel is a very good hotel in the heart of Portree. We had a very good wheelchair accessible room. Royal has quite a good breakfast. Like all of Scotland, parking is difficult so plan ahead. One downside is the bar. Probably the worst bar on Portree., such a shame in a very good hotel

Sadly, I found Scotland in general to be very unfriendly and very unaccommodating to handicap people. My sister has mobility issues and we found almost no place had lifts or accommodations for her. Part of the problem was that our travel agent and Rabbies tours did not communicate her handicap to the hotels they booked for us. This leads me to the Royal in Portree. What a horrible hotel and experience. Mo at the front desk was so helpful but that is about where it ends. When we arrived, Mo told us that she communicated to our travel agent and Rabbies that they did not have a lift and my sister was going to have to climb 4 flights of stairs to get to her room. She cannot climb stairs. Mo shared the emails letting Rabbies know they did not have a lift so that other accommodations could be made and Rabbies told her simply that it was ok and we would make do with where they booked us. Really??? Imagine finding yourself thousands of miles away from home in a port town that is sold out and you have no way to make it up the stairs! So, Mo in her goodness, found a "driver" room - no windows and small, dank space - to let my sister stay for the two nights we were scheduled to be there. My husband and I could climb stairs so even though we paid for porterage, there we were lugging 28 days' worth of luggage up four flights of stairs just to arrive in a room with a filthy bedroom floor, hair all over the bathroom floor, and it looked as though the beds had not been changed. I am not one to complain about those things much but I did go down and ask simply to have a broom so I could sweep. Our beds were not made into a king as requested and mine had at least five springs you could fully see sticking up about three inches. Needless to say, we paid a lot of money for a horrible return. I will be writing my review very soon on Rabbies tours as well. Stay away from this hotel. When we checked out, I asked the girl at the front desk to consider changing the mattresses and she looked shocked. After reading all the reviews on this hotel, you cannot tell me they do not already know how old their beds are. Sad ending to what was supposed to be a trip of a lifetime.

This was stop #3 of 7 on our 2 week trip and was our least favorite. There is nothing wrong or bad about this hotel - it was clean, room was large enough, and it had a TV that worked. But think Jersey shore or Myrtle Beach and you'll get the picture. Attached bar is a locals hang out so that was fun. Dining room was excellent so definitely consider eating here - book a dinner table in advance!

This hotel is old and quaint. The room seemed clean with the exception of the rug which left our clean socks filthy. Front desk staff were accommodating but not overly welcoming. The waitress in the dining room for dinner was rude and angry. Our dining experience at the hotel restaurant was horrible. They were out of many things on the menu and the service was the worst we have had. Morning wait staff at breakfast was the same. Food was mediocre at best. The water in our room barely reached warm which made showers and baths miserable. Over all I’d say …” stay away”. There are plenty of choices on Skye that will make your stay much more pleasant.

This place is the worst place I have ever been to, terrible , everything about the place, went to the public bar asked for a can of lemon Fanta, bar maid informed me that they didn't sell it, but there was at least 30 cans of it on display behind the bar, maybe she needs to get glasses 🕶️🤓

During our stay in the Scottish Highlands, we stopped by the Royal Hotel for dinner. We didnt stay at the hotel, but only stopped by for dinner. We got lucky that we got a table during prime dinner time since all tourists come back around the same time to Portree and then the hunt for available restaurants starts. Staff at the Royal Hotel were friendly and food came out quickly.
