We were initially uncertain about this place, having had the food described to us as Pub Grub, There is, by the way, nothing wrong with Pub Grub, but it can hide a multitude of sins. Anyway, the food here surpassed expectations and was terrific. We will visit again.

The Sunday lunch is one of the best we've ever had. We've had meals there before, both on a Sunday & otherwise days & they've always been of the highest quality. The cauliflower cheese is one of finest we've tasted. Wherever the cheese is sourced, it is really tasty. Keep it up, chef. All in all, the visits we've experienced both in the past & today can't be faulted.

I have just visited the Black Lion with a group of friends. I ordered the rib-eye steak and asked the waiter if I could swap the chips for a side salad. I was informed that this was not possible as the meal came plated as stated on the menu. I explained that I could not eat chips due to medical reasons but this was not taken into account. So basically for £26.95 I got an 8oz steak, half a tomato and an extremely small mushroom. To add insult to injury, I requested my steak rare. The steak when it did come, was medium cooked. It was a uniform thickness so the chef couldn’t use that as an excuse for it being overdone and it was also cold. I am extremely disappointed after spending that amount of money and then getting home to cook myself something to eat! I will never come here again and I very much doubt any of my friends will either! What an appalling service. Not recommended at all. Stay well clear of this place!!

As visitors to Lampeter we were recommended to go to the Black Lion for lunch. After spending time marvelling at the Treasures of the university library we arrived hungry at the Black Lion. After a warm welcome we were given the choice of the fine tables in the elegant dining room. Drinks came quickly thanks to a super helpful waitress and we ordered a range of starters for a light lunch. The cheese and onion tartlet was first class, perfect short pastry and delicious filling. Best of all was the superb home made chutney. Then I had the ham hock which came with cauliflower mousse - that too was excellent and nicely garnished. I asked for bread and a board with warm focaccia soon arrived with herby olive oil and a pot of good olives. This was a remarkably fine lunch with cooking and presentation of a very high standard. A real mid Wales gem.

A really good atmosphere at this hotel, the staff are really friendly and welcoming. The rooms are cosy and I had a good night sleep, that good I left my jacket in the wardrobe when I departed. I called the Hotel and asked them if they had it and they did, safe and sound. The posted it to me without hesitation, this may seem like nothing but I have left phone chargers before that had "gone missing" so I am really happy with their honesty and customer service, honesty is something that cannot be taught. Thank you Black lion staff!

Myself and my wife went in for a meal as the last one 8 weeks ago was amazing, unfortunately this time was so bad I couldn't order pudding, the amount of salt was unbearable, I suggested they try it for themselves but not interested, so for a few mouthfuls of salt they took 10% off the bill, wow a whole 10%, oh well I will just have to accept it with a pinch of salt, as they don't seem interested in retaining customers

We regularly eat at the Black Lion, usually on Italian night and usually choose the same dishes. We were disappointed last week generally. The Spaghetti with Tomatoes & Basil dish had no fresh basil, and just a few tiny chopped up pieces of tomato as a garnish, so really just a plate of spaghetti. The Baked Alaska tasted more like wet icing sugar and was the wrong texture, but it was edible. The portion was smaller than usual. But the portion of sticky toffee pudding was tiny, half the usual size and so I very politely complained about it, suggesting a modest price reduction. This was met with a terse outright refusal and we were told that was the new portion size. It was made clear by the gentleman issuing the bill that, despite us being very regular customers, it was of no concern to him if we didn't return again. I subsequently sent a polite email to the Black Lion mentioning our minor complaint and the apparent lack of interest in retaining us as customers, but received no reply.

Went for evening meal on Italian night after being recommended, and both chose the porchetta from the specials board. Pork is not usually my first choice on a menu, but so glad I had it this time, it was delicious, with plenty of room left for pudding. Staff were really friendly which made it a lovely time. Will certainly be returning.
