Meremeta Lodge

I stayed at Meremeta Lodge as a solo female traveler and remote worker, and it exceeded expectations Location is great: Just outside the entrance to the Marine Park, but you’re still a short walk (30m) away from the park gate. Even nerarer by provided bikes. Clever and convenient. Not beachfront, and that’s a plus: Peaceful, secluded, surrounded by nature. Ideal for focus. Great value for money. Reliable power and internet: I had zero issues working online. This place is remote-work friendly, no doubt. That feels like a real luxury in some islands off the Tanzanian coast. Diving paradise: Easy access to world-class dive sites. I did a lot of dives during my stay and loved being able to walk everywhere while still clocking steps. Nutritious meals: The food is clean and energizing—perfect for anyone working or diving all day. Highly recommended if you're looking to unplug, dive deep (literally and mentally), and get meaningful work done.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Our room was comfortable and we were happy to have A/C. The only thing we didn't enjoy so much in the room was a bit of a smell coming from the drains in the washroom. There was a nice hammock and comfy couch on the porch. It would have been ideal to have some seating available in the room, as we had to sit on beds in the evening when we were trying to avoid mosquitos after dusk. There were plenty of comfortable couches available in the large open common area where the bar and dining areas were located. The food was excellent. Three course dinner was available for USD $15. They were kind enough to cater to my requests for more veg and no rice/pasta/potato side dishes. With early morning scuba trips, they were happy to pack a sizeable breakfast for me to take along, sending fruit, muffins, pancakes, and omelette depending on your preferences. It was great to enjoy it after a couple of dives to not be underwater with a full stomach. I appreciated the free transfer to the beach as early as 5:30AM, and though we generally walked the 20min back to the lodge each afternoon, they were also happy to go pick up other guests who I went diving with. We appreciated the friendly service, and would certainly stay again. The compound was beautiful with all the trees and flowers.

This place just kind of sticks with you. When you arrive, Mr. Meremeta is waiting for you at the airport. And you drive across the beautiful green island with him and turn into a property that looks like a decade of work growing out the flowers to surround each cottage. The lodge is on the edge of the marine park. A bicycle's ride (which he provides and has waiting for you every morning) to the beach. The cottages are smartly engineered. They have a great ceiling fan, good AC, nice showers, layers of thoughtful things like drying racks and shelves, etc. There is a large open restaurant with ample spots for tea and a read in between activities. And again, super interesting engineering. A constant breeze keeps the bugs well at bay. Breakfast is fresh fruit and scratch pastry (and eggs made to order). Dinner is a set menu that rotates every evening. Also, if you choose, Mr. Meremeta can arrange excursions. Most he has his own guide for (who is excellent). For the specialty ones, he will instantly message and help you make arrangements. Didn't expect such an easy experience.

This is a lovely place to have an evening meal. Went there twice during our stay on Mafia Island. The food quality and service was superb. Meremeta is the owner and makes an amazing host. The place is very clean, open aired with fans for cooling.

I strongly reccomend this place because we had a wonderful time there with some friends. The rooms are really big, very clean and with all the comfort. The place is quiet and very beautiful and they cook amazing food. The place is in a good position, not far from the beach and you can borrow the bikes and go there in 5 minutes with a nice and easy ride. The best part of our time in Meremeta was the kindness of the owner, he was always ready to help us and make our journey as comfortable as possible. I really reccomend this place if you want to have a nice time in this beautiful Island.

Nice bungalows set in a well tended garden. Lovely airy restaurant lounge. The manager was very helpful, including helping us to deal with the airlines which is well above and beyond the call of duty. Location is a 15 minute walk from Utende beach. You can borrow a bike (Meremeta has bikes) or get a tuk-tuk.
