The hotel is a loverly building welcoming staff. We booked the 8 course tasting menu. Rather disappointed we were the only couple in the main dinning room, which was rather uncomfortable. The canapés were really disappointing . We were requested to turn up at the bar 15 minutes before the time meal was booked for the canapés, only for no staff to be there, left waiting for 15 minutes. The meat course should have been the highlight, unfortunately it was uneatable. When we complained we were told it was going to be taken of the menu as they had complaints the previous two nights. They still charged us full price. For the cost of the hotel and meal not the standard we would expect.

Spa and overnight stay. Impressive hotel with every attention to detail. Gorgeous rooms and professional staff. Too hot in the bathroom, stifling. Spa - therapists friendly and good. Spa too small - only a tiny sauna and too small steam rooms (apparently they are building a new one). Ice bucket was cold water - too hot to stay iced. Tea bags poor quality in room and restaurant, I like my tea strong - no hope with these tea bags. Beautiful grounds, will definitely return.

Afternoon tea the worst we have ever had & also the most expensive. Chef needs sacking before the hotels excellent reputation is destroyed. All sandwiches & scones were not fresh & amount to eat was minimal.Service was extremely slow & disjointed.

Our experience matched some of the disappointing recent reviews of the afternoon tea experience. The good points first - the hotel and rooms in which the tea is served are very impressive. The downside is the tea itself is miles behind what you would expect given the supposed calibre of the hotel and the prices. The quantity is meagre, the quality just not up to scratch with stale and basic sandwiches and scones that are dry as a bone , the cakes are pretty routine. The pacing is all wrong with the tea served 30 mins or more ahead of the main event by which time it was cold. The staff are affable enough but seemed pretty disinterested. Some basics missing that just isn’t right given the pretensions. Best avoided unless they seriously up their game.

What an absolutely gorgeous hotel, staff, food, decor and the bedrooms are fantastic. Such a hidden gem which I will definitely be recommending to family and friends when they’re visiting Northumberland. Thanks for looking after us, special mentions to Shaun and Josh who went above and beyond

Booked for a half day spa break mine was a gift voucher other paid for. Greeted by helpful staff who got us settled in very quickly giving us all info we needed. Spa facilities were excellent very clean and access to unlimited bottles of water. Treatments were very good once again lovely staff one facial one massage. We opted for three course meal and were not disappointed meal was delicious cannot praise it enough. The only thing was we had to pay extra for tea and coffee because we had drinks at the beginning of visit which I wasn’t aware of. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and the half day spa break.

This is a review of afternoon tea. We booked for five to celebrate two birthdays. The building is absolutely stunning. The decor and furnishings throughout are outstanding.Cannot fault anything about the building. Afternoon tea was served in the conservatory which was beautifully decorated but cold and lacked atmosphere. Probably down to the time of year. Staff were fine but could have been more attentive. The food was disappointing. Three tasteless finger sandwiches per person. The smallest slice of sausage roll, a small cheese scone and a fruit scone both of which were hard and could not have been made today. Scones need to be eaten on the day they are made. Bookings are made in advance therefore it is easy to know how many are required and to make them on the day. The tea should have been served at the same time as serving the food instead of 30 minutes before. The cakes were pleasant enough and hopefully homemade but I doubt it. Overall the food part of the experience did not match the venue. I cannot say I would recommend afternoon tea despite really wanting to. Afternoon Tea should be an experience especially as most are for a special occasion. The staff need to be interactive and at least asking if we were celebrating anything in particular or merely wanting a special experience. This is not a criticism of the new server but of the training.Would like to try a meal and fingers crossed for a better experience.

The building is stunning, there are so many bits of this amazing building to explore and enjoy. It combines the old with a very sympathetic refurb and the addition of a beautiful pool and spa. Our classic room was exceedingly comfortable, with many thoughtful details. We aren’t fans of tasting menus so avoided emerald and ate in cloisters. The dining room is beautiful and cosy. One particular mention should be the levels of service which are very good. The menu is fantastic and food equally so. One small ****** is that while the wine list is varied, the quality of the wine could do with moving up a notch. Excellent breakfast the next morning again with excellent service. A walk in the vast grounds- the golf course was empty. Check in process slightly contrived and could be slicker but that’s a tiny ******. Overall this place has an abundance of wow factor and a bit off the beaten track which adds to its charm. Also excellent value for money. You won’t be disappointed!
