Machangulo Beach Lodge

I had been dreaming and saving to go to Machangulo Lodge since I visited Inhaça Island about 8 years ago. I finally was able to go, and take my husband and 3 year old child for my husband’s 40th birthday. Knowing full well that the booking was non-refundable, I was committed to going, for 2 nights, which is what I could afford. Firstly, nowhere before making the booking, does it state that the transfer to the lodge would cost an additional $80 per person per way (the child going free, which was something) (unless I missed it but think this should be very clear when making the booking). No information was provided about parking at the Marina, transfers, etc. Once we asked we did get information, although this should be forthcoming due to the nature of the accommodation. Secondly, and the main reason why I give the poor rating is that I got incredibly ill, despite all attempts, and was unable to travel there (and in particular since this is a remote destination). Despite this, the lodge outright was unwilling to even discuss possible rescheduling the trip, and showed no understanding whatsoever. Perhaps finding a way when such as if there was another last-minute cancellation, or anything really, would have been appreciated. I am deeply disappointed, and would have paid the additional costs for the experience, but am surprised at how uninterested and unwilling this Lodge was to be able to cater for this unexpected situation. Again, while I understand the conditions of non-refunds, and the fact that lodge is small, I would think that they could find it in their heart to be more accommodating in such an event. This is standard practice. I was so excited to come, and was raving about this place before coming, but now, unfortunately, I could never recommend this lodge. Its too risky.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Brilliant and helpful staff. - Claudio, Lillian, Josai, and the whole team were great. Activites were well organised and true beautiful. The boat ride is not for the week, but something the hotel cannot be held to account for. It's Choppy across that bay, with our way out being very hard. Our way back was fantastic. The outdoor shower was epic. The rooms were turned around a couple of times a day which is fantastic. The place only has ten villas so theres tops 20 guests. insanely private. Whilst it's a family resort, we went on our honeymoon and it was just perfect for us. For those brits concerned with travel to maputo the hotel is fantastic. Staff awaited us as the airport, even helped us with a hotel when we missed our boat transfer, then picked us up in the morning. I would recommend thoroughly.

I wish there was a 6-star option because five stars simply aren’t enough to describe how incredible this paradise-like lodge is. From the breathtaking views, perfect private beach, delicious food, gorgeous rooms, amazing adventure options and beyond wonderful staff, expectations are exceeded from the moment you step foot off the boat and onto the exquisite beach. I’d like to give a big shout out to the people who made this holiday all the more special. Thank you to Jose, Paulo, Claudio and Lidia - you made us feel so at home and we couldn’t be more grateful for your kindness.

Loved the hotel, very attentive staff, great food and impeccable service!! Everything was amazing!!!

A really nice lodge in a beautiful setting. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with lovely views. There are a lot of stairs throughout the lodge, so it’s not a place for people who are not as mobile. It’s a good holiday for families with small children - if that’s not your vibe, then maybe this lodge isn’t for you. The food was good and the staff were friendly.

From the minute we arrived on the boat with the team greeting us on the beach, we felt so cared for and spoiled. The delicious cocktails made by Claudio, the beautiful bungalow, the pristine beach walks and our canoeing in the mangrove swamps and sand bank outing to see the star fish led by Abelio and Paulo will be remembered.
