I love this place, if you want to unwind from a busy life style this is where you can do it, I've met the nicest people here, Jim has become one of my best friends in Costa Rica, he is very hospitable . Always willing to help with his guests needs. The location is directly on the beach in the most beautiful jungle setting. I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm looking forward to coming back to my home away from home. See you soon Jim .

Absolute paradise. If you love rustic style, relaxed living with the jungle above & the beach literally on your doorstep then you’ll love it here. Cabuya is small & totally unspoilt. A couple of restaurants & 2 small supermarkets, a short drive to Montezuma if you want more tourism & activities. I stayed with my two teenage sons who completely chilled in between surfing & visiting the waterfalls, both activities in Montezuma, it was great to get totally away from it & just enjoy the wildlife & views. Jim and his dogs were the perfect hosts, there but never intrusive. Jim’s local knowledge & kind quiet manner were much appreciated. My youngest teen enjoyed walking Rocky too. We would go back in a heartbeat.

I stayed in the mini cabina which is good for one person or a couple. Not a lot of room to cook but Jim the host is happy to share the communal kitchen by the pool. A nice relaxing stay with lots of wildlife. Cabuya is not a touristy place so it’s great if you want to get away and be in nature. A few nearby restaurants that were all good and reasonably priced. Cabuya Island cemetery is worth the trip, accessible only at low tide by land bridge. Jim was a great host and helpful with tips and transportation. Id highly recommend and price was very budget friendly! Pura Vida

Jim's place is for those people, who are searching for calmness and happiness between papaya trees, coconut palms, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, iguanas, frogs, avocado trees- and most importanly the dogs milly, skippy, rocky and benji. The cabinas are simple. Good fan. Amazing sounds of animals and waves. Everything you need in the kitchen and bathroom. We enjoyed every second of our stay. The walks on the stoney beach, discovering bones, corals and shells, the jumps into the carefully cleaned pool, the mountainbiking to Montezuma and last but not least: Jim hisself. He welcomend us like we were coming home. People who criticize have neither a sense for Jim nor for the paradise he created. With this in mind sláinte! We would definitely visit you again ;)

SECRET TIP. This hotel was unique! The beach was like a beautiful private beach and in the trees you could watch monkeys and squirrels. In addition, you could visit a small island at low tide. In the morning we were offered avocado toast, we were also allowed to wash and got fresh coconuts. The bungalows were very cool and definitely something special. The owner was very nice and gave us as German directly a free beer. We can only recommend this hotel.

We spent three lovely days at the Howler Monkey Hotel. I could write about all the positives, but I'd like to focus on Jim, the place's owner and operator. After quite a few challenges and difficulties in Costa Rica, we arrived to Cabuya tired and unsure of what to expect. The level of kindness and honesty that Jim welcomed us with made up for everything we had experienced so far. Him and his four dogs, as well as the supporting staff, made us feel calm, secure and welcome. Thank you for this much needed dose of real pure humanity, one that is becoming rare in today's world!

We spent 3 nights at howler monkey, which is such a special place and we will always remember and keep it in our hearts. The cabins are well equipped, clean and being tended to. We had a kitchen and bathroom as well, which were totally fine and easy to handle. The owner, Jim is a wonderful and warm hearted person, turning with care and kindess to others. He is such an interesting irish man, with vision to make change in the world. He was telling us about his ideas of recycling materials, i was fascinated about the chairs he made, using an old frame and wires and plastic. He cares deeply about nature and animals, also reuses an old fridge to grow plants in it and has more wonderful ideas to support humanity. We had a wonderful time there, spending time with his loving dogs and feeling great in this honest and friendly environment. We hope we can come back, because right now we are spending a night at a near hotel (because howler is full) which is not even close to the Inclusiveness and connection we have experienced at howler monkey :) Thank you for having us 🌿🙂🌼 Nora and Andre 21.02.2022

There is no place near Montezuma as good as this one. You must go there if you love a conjuction of jungle, sea and rustic. Cabins are comfortable, spacy, well ventilated and appropriately furnished. A lot of work has been done there. The whole place has so lazy vibe, it's up to you if you decide to lie all day in a hammock, go to pool, kayaking, biking or take a hike in beckoning green pura vida nature around Cabuya. No one will push you into anything. Perfect asylum from hectic city lifestyle. We stayed for four nights, but ultimately found ourselves regreting we couldn't stay more. One of the top hotel experiences in Costa Rica.

I stayed with my friend and her kids in one of the large bungalows. Overall it was a nice, basic stay. The facilities were clean. The kitchen allowed us to make basic meals and we could borrow gadgets from the communal kitchen as needed. The staff was very helpful about adding an extra bed and providing an additional patio table for our group. We enjoyed the hammocks on the patio and the pool, which we could use at all hours. The grounds are great to wander around in and you'll see monkeys, iguanas, hummingbirds, toads, crabs and geckos, at least! And the beach access is great, with a relaxing view. Jim, the host, is available to help you with any questions about transport or directions and to tell you a bit about the area. He also plays his music quite loudly during the day, sometimes starting at 7 am. I rather enjoyed it, but it might not be for everyone. The dogs on the property are all very loving and I enjoyed having a few stop by to spend time on my patio.
