Hôtel du Grand Lac Excelsior

This hotel sits by Lake Geneva with a stunning view of the lake and mountains. That’s probably the only good thing about this hotel, the view. Upon checking in, the staff wasn’t very nice, cold like. We were supposed to get an email to get the free bus rides confirmation from the gal at the front desk. She never bothered to send us the email. After 2 ½ hours we went downstairs to ask for it. It was finally taken care of by the nicer gentleman. The hotel decor had a mix match of everything and anything. Didn’t know whether if it was a Chinese hotel or a Swiss hotel. There were Chinese lion statues with European decor. Confusing. The floor had a dirty yellow color carpet from entry all the way to room. Our room wasn’t any better. Nothing modern or up to date aside from the IKEA desk and two chairs. The bathroom sink and toilet blended right in with the carpet, dirty yellow color. No coffee brewer for coffee drinkers like myself when that’s the first thing I have when I wake up. Overall, this hotel only has a stunning view. Everything else is “motel” quality. Nothing amazing or extravagant. For the price this place is charging per night, one would expect more. But be prepared for less. If you decide to book this place, take into consideration that it’s not what it seems on their website. If none of the above as mentioned doesn’t bother you and you just need an expensive place to sleep, then this hotel shouldn’t be a problem.

Everything about this hotel was perfect – welcoming staff, great breakfast, and breathtaking views. I really enjoyed my stay!

Love coming back to this hotel every time! The hotel is more than 100 years old, true belle époque: breakfast room, etc. The view from the room balcony is fantastic! And it is in EVERY room of the hotel! Room is quite spacious, equipped with mini-bar and touiletteries as well. Staff is very friendly, swimming pool is HUGE and almost no people there. Also provide services of aqua aerobics on specific days. Location is also great: close to the bus station in case of rain, overall around 20 mins walk to the Chillon Castle and Hauptbahnhof/Christmas market/Centre ville. Also 10 mins walk to the Glion funi. Over they stay I only had 1 issue: non-working safe locker, since the battery was discharged, but that was quickly solved by the staff👍

Great location on lake shore and lovely view from fourth floor and the balcony. Very friendly staff at the reception and a warm welcome. Breakfast buffet a bit hot and miss with empty containers and lack of glasses if a willing staff doing their best. Handy for town, shops, transport and walks to Queen studio, Chillon castle etc. The Montreux card given by the hotel proved a great saving too for transport, entrances etc. Overall a comfortable stay.

A very elegant hotel directly on the lake walkway but very quiet. Spacious room with everything you need. The pool and sauna were great and the breakfast buffet was very good with great staff. Uncomplicated parking. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It's an older hotel which needs a lot of things renovated but it still is very charming the value for the price was perfect for us.

First time in Montreux so didn’t really know too much. Stephan on reception was very helpful and friendly and gave us lots of information during check in and throughout our stay. Stephan explained the travel card well to us, the car parking situation and helped us with a kettle for the room during our stay. Room was nice and clean with great views over the lake. At breakfast there was a lot of options available to chose from.

For me, as a Swiss, the Hotel Excelsior in Montreux is one of the best hotels in the world. The hotel staff are truly angelic and always ready to help in any way. The hotel's location is unique, and the restaurant is truly beautiful and charming. All of the hotel's facilities are, in the truest sense of the word, perfect and fabulous. We have known the Hotel Excelsior since the mid-1980s; since then, we have visited the hotel almost every summer. For me, it is also associated with wonderful childhood memories. We have been back from Montreux for two weeks now, and we already miss the Hotel Excelsior. Best wishes, Dr. G. R. Garosi
