Read all these lovely reviews, was so impressed, book my wedding anniversary in a king room (based on the pictures on the website). Received a really friendly welcome, shown to our room, was nothing like the picture..I would class it a small double. Asked for a quiet room, got one overlooking the bar entrance, hence all the chatter, kids running around. Very disappointed. Went down to have some food, bar was packed, no tables, although nobody else was eating.. had to drive down to the village to the Star Inn, food was excellent and staff friendly, even considered booking a nice room for the night. We were so disappointed, got up to a 2* breakfast, again so disappointing. The room was shabby, chipped furniture, radiator that couldn’t be turned off, was like a sauna all night. On a plus the bed was lovely and clean and comfy. Such a shame, this could be a really lovely venue, needs some money spent on the decor, turn the dormant breakfast room into an evening restaurant so people can try your food. Really sorry but won’t be back.

The first room we were shown looked a bit tired, but when I came downstairs and asked if they had another, there was no problem. We were sorted out without question and given a family room - actually adjoining rooms. The bathroom was large, the ceilings are high and rooms had lots of windows and were very airy. The food was varied and very well cooked - we stayed in for dinner all three nights as this place is wonderfully remote. Service is very fast. Breakfast is excellent, too. But the stars of Clennel are Rocky and Roz. Rocky is the friendliest host you could meet. He would come and sit and have a drink with us and told us a bit of his history and the history of Clennel, and of some famous guests, without giving away any personal secrets - someone should write a book of his life, then make a film of it. Pity someone has used the title already. Roz takes orders, serves the tables and knits. All the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room was excellent size and very clean. The bar is the heart of the hotel, and is rustic and full of charm. The food is very tasty and the breakfast is hearty and full of flavour. It is an ideal place to relax, has a casual dress code, and a group of staff who make the visit a joy. It’s not a generic brand, so it has little touches like toiletries in the rooms (none of this we don’t put it in for covid excuse) and towels that are luxuriously thick. The bath in our room was a good size, so I didn’t have my knees around my chin! This is very old world style, the windows in our room were non opening, as they were set in a stone surround. The bathroom window did open though. The room had 2 large window bays, with chairs in each so you could sit and drink your tea while overlooking the gardens. Very civilised.

We stayed for 2 nights in our camper van and could not have picked a better place. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful, the gardens where we enjoyed a drink in the sun were stunning, as were the views of the surrounding countryside. Rocky was an excellent host, gathering anyone left in the bar towards the end of the evening around his table for a chat and a drink. We are definitely planning to return for a week in the very near future.
